20 Ways To Become More Self-Sufficient before the crunch arrives

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

One thing you don’t want to be during the coming “crunch” — a polite word for “collapse” — is dependent on the system. The more you can take care of yourself, the better off you’ll be physically, financially, emotionally and even spiritually. Here are 20 ways to become more self-sufficient while you still can:

  1. Get a small solar system that can be used to run a laptop or recharge batteries
  2. Drill a water well and install a hand pump or solar-powered DC pump
  3. Set up a rainwater collection system or barrel
  4. Stash some cash: stock away some green dollar bills and lots of U.S. nickels
  5. Own and learn how to use a handgun, rifle and shotgun
  6. Store some ammunition
  7. Own and know how to use a water filter
  8. Start a garden this spring and acquire more food production skills
  9. Save garden seeds so you can plant the next generation of food
  10. Acquire a wood-burning stove for heat and cooking
  11. Possess a large quantity of stored food; enough for at least 90 days
  12. Get to know your local farmers and ranchers
  13. Store up valuable barter items that are relatively cheap today: Alcohol, coffee, ammo, matches, etc.
  14. Safely store extra vehicle fuel (gasoline, diesel) at your home or ranch
  15. Be sure to use fuel stabilizers to extend their life.
  16. Learn emergency first aid skills and own first aid supplies
  17. This could save a life or possibly save a trip to the emergency room.
  18. 16) Start growing your own medicine
  19. Plant and grow aloe vera, oregano, garlic, cayenne pepper and other medicinal herbs that can replace a surprisingly large number of prescription drugs. Oregano, for example, is a potent antibiotic. Aloe vera treats cuts, scrapes and burns.
  20. Own emergency hand-cranked radios so you can tune in to news and announcements
  21. My #1 recommended brand is Freeplay.
  22. Boost your immune system with vitamin D and superfoods
  23. Increase your level of physical fitness
  24. Learn how to raise animals such as rabbits, chickens, goats or cows.

How about some advice for broke people living in apartments? Are they all expected to just die like good little sheeple? Seriously, folks, not everyone is able to afford a homestead out in the country, but I’m willing to bet a good lot of apartment dwellers would like to hear something about how to boost their odds of survival, too.

I agree Marika!!! Single mothers or fathers that can barely afford their rent… Have less than 5$ in their account… work 2 jobs… Have to put gas in the car, as gas prices steadily increase… People who feed their children first and eat whatever is left on the child’s plate because they really don’t know if the little food they have will last until the next paycheck…and they want to make sure their kid has food first…Not to mention prices on food has gone up!!! Afraid electricity will get shut off…car may be repossessed…the list goes on and on!… And NOT being another casualty in the gov. welfare/foodstamp system.
How are we supposed to plan for the collaps or crunch? Kinda hard to start a homestead that way!!!
So, ARE we supposed to sit back and die??? I guess it’s “oh well” for folks like us! Or do u have some GOOD advice for people like us??? PLEASE let us know!

Theres still things you can do. Learn survival skills.

Look into aquaponics, thats something you can do to learn gardening with small amounts of space perfect for an apartment.

Buying all the gear and preparedness items in the world doesnt help if a person lacks the knowledge of how to survive. Thats what you should be focused on if your budget is short. The getting nickels idea is worthwhile too.

Unlike green backs american change actually has value in the metals.

Most important for you is to gain info, use the disposable income you have to put together a bug out bag and self defense. And plan your ability to get to either a survivable place outside the urban area, or to a preestablished meeting spot with relatives/ friends.

I know thats not very helpful in the end, but facts are facts. The urban areas in the US are not well suited to existing during a collapse and not depending on a government bread line.

Oh and make sure you get into good physical shape. There will be a good few communities willing to take in people who actually know some life skills….

But srry if some obese people showed up on my doorstep with no useable skills, to be real id turn them away. Im not taking in people spending time and resources when they obviously didnt care enough to look after themselves let alone have an understanding of contributing to a community.

May sound harsh but again its just a fact, ill look out for my own before taking a chance on strangers and first impressions mean mountains to me. Whether that makes me a bad person or not guess ill find out in the end. But id risk saying that many communities outside the metro’s will have near the same philosophy.

first impression of you is absolute nutcase.

one fat person could provide enough protein for an average family for weeks..you havnt a clue.

          @Anon… O.o

If you’re broke, think about what you DO have. Take inventory. If you haven’t used the tennis racket in a year or other superfluous bunches of stuff, think about having a garage/parking space sale. Sell the plasma TV (good riddance) or ancient stereo system. Change out the useless for things of real survival value. Make lists so you can prioritize: Must haves v. would be nice to haves. Set goals & budget accordingly.

Be neighborly. Check to see if there are other folks in your complex interested in prepping. People who working together is better. Gather and cash in on recyclables. Make resourcefulness a game for the kids. Find your green thumb and plant tomatoes in pots/tubs on the lanai and any other edible you can get to grow there. Potatoes can be grown in a sack. Ask the manager if you can use that bare spot to grow vegies. Train them to grow up to save on space. Grow something edible.

If you know what you’re after, look at thrift shops, garage and estate sales. Look at everything with an eye for it’s usefulness in survival.

Be an advantageous friend by doing some weeding for a widow in the neighborhood who has a ton of fruit falling off her trees. (or whatever…) Get to know the ins and outs of your neighborhood well.

Since you have internet access… find the tons of useful skill building videos. Keep a notebook. A notebook will help you see progress so you can be happy about all the self-discipline you’ve acquired.

      xo

I would add one more to this list: Get off prescription medications! Especially those that you can’t just stop taking “cold turkey”, like opiate painkillers, benzodiazepines, and antidepressants & antianxiolytics. When the collapse comes, you want to be on top of your game taking care of your family, not debilitated in sick bay having terrible withdrawals from running out of your last bottle of meds. Beleive me, drugs like Elavil are ABSOLUTE HELL to get off of, it takes 5 months to get past all the unpleasant symptoms of being off it, even if you taper. Some drugs, like the benzos, can KILL you in an untreated withdrawal process. Start using natural remedies, eat healthier, quit smoking and exercise so you don’t need to be dependent on pharmaceuticals.
