Spark gap transmitters are the oldest type of radio transmitter made by man. They were first used around 1888 and remained legal until the 1920s when their use became greatly restricted. World War II delayed their complete ban outside of emergency communications for a few years. Now the only way to use them legally is inside a faraday cage. They operate as jammers for the same reason they were banned, they take up a lot of the radio spectrum. If you ever want to or have to jam drone or radio signals, make one of these.

As an extra-class amateur radio operator, let me tell you, don’t do this.

In the first place it’s not likely to be at all effective, that is unless one knows beforehand exactly which frequencies need to be jammed and build the jammer accordingly. And, given the wide bandwidth of the emissions it would take a lot of power overall to deliver the necessary power needed to be effective in a relatively narrow-band control channel. Much more power than can be delivered by any simple automobile ignition coil unless the target is just a few feet away.

Secondly, it is seriously illegal to operate.

Lastly, one would would get oneself killed with the high voltages and currents unless one knew exactly what one was doing. Even then, maybe.

Bad idea. One should take one’s “prepping” efforts to more productive avenues.

Generally speaking, a bad idea? Yes, for the average, non technical person. Serious injury, or even death, is possible. Illegal? You betcha! Expect serious consequences if you get caught. Now… I did say generally speaking. If, however, your country is under attack, by drones, either by outside forces, or by internal tyranny, then survival may well take precedence over legality.

A spark gap transmitter might be effective if properly built and employed. Most likely that will mean lots of power, perhaps multiple transmitters, and an antenna, or antennas, constructed to be effective at the frequencies of interest. This will involve satellite frequencies (info that is available online) in the GHz region. While spark gap transmitters will be well down in energy in this frequency range, the satellite signal will also be very weak. With a proper setup, and a drone immediately overhead, jamming could well be possible, particularly the downlink, which, if jammed, could prevent the drone operator from effecting course changes, or firing weapons.

From a purely technical perspective, perhaps something a bit more sophisticated, although not a terribly onerous task for many people involved in RF communications, or even experienced hams. I would suggest a comb generator/s operating within the relevant satellite frequency band/s. RF tech. people will know what a comb generator is and how to build one, or employ commercial RF signal generators in a suitable configuration. The signal would be wideband modulated, and the comb frequencies spaced such that they are close enough that the ENTIRE frequency band of interest is covered via the wideband modulation. You wouldn’t need hundreds of watts either to blow away the weak downlink satellite signal received by the drone. This method assumes that the drone will employ some form of spread spectrum RF communication, and the wideband modulated, signal would disrupt that no matter what form of digital security or encryption is being employed. The drone operator would likely lose control of the drone, even though he may still have a video link. The drone may default to some kind of failsafe mode, perhaps hold a certain course, or even return to base, however, it’s mission would be circumvented.

Yes, building something like this is beyond the capability of most people, however it is still very possible for many within technically advanced Western countries. Let’s hope it never becomes necessary for those who can to implement them.

Forgot to mention, homing in on a continuously broadcasting source is 70 year old technology. Want a drone to know just where to aim? Just turn on that jammer!

        • Anonymous

Note: you would NOT want to leave the jammer on 24/7 or it will likely be detected before you really need it. Turn it on when you believe there is an immanent threat, then leave the building/location you are occupying. While the jammed drone, itself, would not be able to *take out* the jammer, a manned aircraft, cruise missile, or ground troupes could. In the mean time you have made your escape. On the other hand, it you WANTED to encourage an attack on a particular location, for whatever purpose, by all means, leave the jammer on.

Imagine a large city in which many effective jammers exist, and could be recreated relatively quickly in the event they are destroyed. What if the jammer was located in one building, and the antenna located the next building over. Let them *take out* the antenna, then gather the jamming equipment and set it up again elsewhere. Lots of possibilities for the creative minded in a technically advanced society, including blinding the satellite itself. Of course anything you do could, and very likely would, be detected (especially blinding a satellite) which is why you employ such devices only when strategically necessary, not willy nilly for giggles. After all, if such a situation ever exited, you are effectively at war and under attack.

The main point is, drones CAN be jammed. They do not employ some kind of unknown, impenetrable technology. Again, let us hope conditions never exist in which jamming devices even need to be considered.

Warren, What are the high voltages and currents you are talking about? I am a General Class Ham Radio Operator. High and Low power signals have nothing to do with the required voltage to operate them. This statement you made makes me believe that you are NOT a Ham Radio Operator. My callsign is W6XPA. What’s yours?

Warren is absolutely correct. Don’t even think about building and using one.! As to it’s effectiveness, I can’t be sure. Back in the late 50′s, I purchased a radio jammer “finned tube” from army surplus. Cost me a couple of dollars and I wanted the parachute out of it. It turned out to be the complete “spark gap” jammer. I supplied the 97 VDC and lit it up. Knocked out our TV and radio instantly. A friend a mile away verified that it also knocked out his. Another ham radio operator friend close to 12 miles away also verified it knocked out ALL his electronics.. I immediately destroyed the unit and buried the parts. There were and I’m sure still are big time fines etc. for using something like this. I wouldn’t even get caught with one on a bet.

Then it appears that what you are saying is that it works. If something mechanical is after you it stops that machine as well as every other machine right?

(they used this in the matrix)

        • Warren

A unit carefully designed for the military 50 years ago worked against the mostly amplitude and frequency modulated MF-, HF-, and low VHF-band signals of the day. These days the signals are digitally encoded and error-correcting, designed to be highly jamming-resistant. And, the bandwidth that would need to be covered is hundreds of time broader, necessitating correspondingly higher power to jam it all. I’ll stick with my earlier statement, “not likely to be effective”, adding “except maybe against a Radio Shack toy or a garage door opener.”

Why are these directions on Facebook? I thought Facebook was collecting info just like Google for the NSA? Is it illegl to mak this little gizmo now. You just might land in a Fema Camp if it is. There are a lot of them waiting to be filled up, They are now in many places,

Drone Wars: The Beginning uses drone jammers as a plot device. The novel has five star reviews and is right up prepper’s alley. http://www.docspress.com

I’m going to sign off on my participation in this thread with this product label:

Efficacy: Better at telling a drone where to aim than disabling a drone.

Regulatory: Stiff fines and/or imprisonment for testing or use.

Environmental: Lethal to humans, pets, any organism that comes in close proximity.

I bet you could build something better using the workings of a microwave oven if you could make it directional but now might not be a bad time to buy an air-gun ready to shoot these drones down when her next door wants to spy on you.

      “Warren!

Everything we do is becoming illegal these days and if breaking the law is needed to protect our human rights then so be it.
