Freeze Dried Food As Part of Your Preps

As we all know freeze dried food is a great way to stock your pantry for stores that will last a long time.  Over the years I’ve eaten a lot of freeze dried stuff while hiking, camping, or what have you.  It’s light-weight, it has calories, and all you have to do for the most part is add boiling water and let it set for a few minutes and you have a hot meal.  I always keep at least a day’s worth of freeze dried food in my BOB – usually more – and it’s so light I don’t even notice it’s there.

Awesome!

But what about meat?  Let’s say TS has HTF and it’s been weeks or even months since you’ve been able to get to a grocery store or shoot a deer or whatever it is you do for meat.  Recently I was approached by a company that offers meat in addition to their freeze dried line.  Well hell, you might think, “I’ve got all kinds of meat in the freezer,” which is great as long as the power doesn’t go out.  If it does you’d better be converting those food stores to jerky before you lose it all!

Or you might say, “I’ve already got canned meat in my pantry,” which is also very good, but what happens after a year or two?  Most canned meat today doesn’t last all that long – relatively speaking – in storage.

But I found a company that makes this bold statement:

How long will this canned meat last? Each of our canned meats are processed in a very different technique than most canned meats in the market. They are slow pressure cooked at a low 240 degrees and have NO EXPIRATION date. A reasonable shelf life is approximately 12 -15 years but many individuals accept it may last 30 – 35 years or even longer.

So I had them send me a can of their beef and tried it out.  I fried it up and ate it with some Manwich sauce and you know what?  It was delicious!  Let’s say for the sake of argument that the meat only lasts half as long as they contend… that’s still 15 years you can hold on to some canned meat!

Believe me, if we’re suddenly in the middle of TEOTWAWKI the last thing you’re going to worry about is your meat lasting 15 years.  Unless you have a ridiculous amount saved up it will likely be gone in five years, which by that point you want to make sure you have a garden up and running anyway.

The way I look at freeze dried food is this:  I don’t plan on it being my main food source after TSHTF.  I do plan on using it to supplement my other foodstores though, which means that it – hopefully – will last even longer that way.
