Selous's Gear - The Ka-Bar/Becker BK-2

One of my many hobbies is collecting “interesting” and functional knives. Since one of my favorite activities happens to be camping and bushcrafting, I am always on the lookout for the perfect camp knife. One of the best for non-kitchen chores is the BK-2.

Now this is a serious hunk of steel which you can feel in its heft the 1st time you pick it up! For light chopping such as would be needed to build a brush shelter, this blade is more than adequate. If batoning your firewood into bite size chunks is required, I have no fear this blade will perform adequately. It has a black coating that protects it from rust, but may make it a bit more difficult to clean if used for certain chores.

The blade is 1095 cro-van steel and it shares the same Grivory handle as it’s big brother, the BK-7, and probably the BK-9. The blade is at least a quarter inch thick!! Monster!  The blade measures 5.5 inches long and the knife measures 10.5 inches long overall. It comes with a hard plastic Glass-Filled Nylon sheath with a nylon web belt loop that is removeable if you wish to use the integrated lashing slots to attach it to whatever you desire. It can also be purchased with a Heavy-Duty Polyester sheath with front pocket, similar to my BK-7 sheath.

If you prefer a leather sheath, they can be found on evilbay, where I purchased mine. The BK-2 sits deep within the sheath to eliminate a keeper strap.

1095 Cro-Van Steel is an easy to sharpen, plain carbon steel used in knife making. Proven to be one of the most popular steels used in KA-BAR knives. Here is an excellent review on YouTube.

I bought mine from Amazon as it was the best price I could find at the time. It’s not cheap at $72.98 (free shipping) but you get what you pay for and it is made in the USA. It now resides in my GHB along with my Mora.
