Coming Back From the Dead – An SHTF Change of Pace

Here’s a subject that’s a little (ok, a lot) off topic, but since we’re all friends here I thought I’d throw it out there and see if anybody bites.

I read an interesting story recently about three people who died and then come back from the dead. All of them reported “out of body” experiences, seeing other (dead) people or spirits, and a couple of them had remarkable recoveries from their illnesses.

Like you, I’ve read many instances of life after death and I’ve yelled, “Don’t go into the light!” as a joke with my friends.  I watched the scary movie with Bruce Willis and the little kid that could see dead people.  I love a good horror show or scary book.  But to have visions while you’re dead?

Do you think there’s something to it?

My father is absolutely convinced of it. I’d like to believe it, but I’ve always been a very science oriented type of guy. Show me the evidence. Show me the proof.

After my brother died nearly ten years ago I had some extremely lucid dreams about him. Interestingly enough, the two that felt the most real were when I was camping out in the woods very close to an old Micmac burial mound in my uncle’s tipi. They were so real I woke up with my heart pounding and nearly sweating. Magic? Coincidence? Synapses firing in random order after a traumatic experience?

My dad swears they were “visits.” I called them lucid dreams. I wanted them to be visits and they felt extremely real, but I just can’t let my mind go there without some kind of hard evidence.

Here’s an interesting experience that happened when I was about sixteen or seventeen. My mother was boiling eggs in the kitchen and my younger sister called me from the living room. I was in the kitchen with my mom and with no awareness at all of my surroundings I bolted towards the living room and got that pot full of boiling water straight down my belly. It went from just under my pecs to just below the belt line and covered about half my stomach. My mom looked at me with shock on her face then threw the pot into the sink and grabbed my t-shirt and pulled it off my body. I remember thinking, “Man, she just tore my shirt!”

There was no pain at all as apparently I’d gone into instant shock. I looked down and saw the skin from my stomach stretching from the shirt to my torso as she tried to yank the shirt off and it just didn’t register. My sister came to the doorway to the kitchen and suddenly it felt like I was looking over her shoulder at the whole scene. Talk about a feeling of displacement! There was no feeling of movement at all – just boom! And there I was looking at myself from over my sister’s shoulder. Just as suddenly I was “back in my body” and the pain started to hit. If you’ve never been burned you can’t really get a good idea of just how painful it is. I wound up with third degree burns on my stomach and the scars lasted for nearly 25 years. You’d have to have a trained eye to see it now.

But the experience I had of looking over my sister’s shoulder was certainly weird. I can explain it away simply by blaming it on the shock to my system and that’s what I’ve done, but I often wonder if there’s more to life – and death – than we can imagine.

Science, in a lot of ways, has certainly proven to be stranger than fiction. Ever study quantum mechanics? Or looked at the general and special theories of relativity?

Do you suppose there’s a scientific explanation for these kinds of things? Maybe some kind of quantum displacement that happens is these situations? Or a type of energy we haven’t discovered yet?

I guess the thing I like about science is the approach. If a theory is wrong it will eventually be proven and a new one will replace it until it can either be proven right or wrong.

But I’m curious to what you think. As you know we don’t write about religion or politics much at this blog and there’s a good reason for it. I like to present information that’s useful and to some degree measurable. For example: “If you do a lot of canning then after TSHTF you’ll be better off than those who don’t.” That’s the kind of practical thing that’s measurable.

With politics and religion there’s a lot of polarization, which I think is a shame because people should try and understand the other point of view before jumping to conclusions. Maybe we’d all learn something, which is why I enjoy the conversations I have with my dad.

Having said that I’d like to hear what you think. If you’d like to comment keep it respectful no matter what the other point of view may be. Healthy disagreement is fine, but name calling and vitriol is not.
