This is the second installment of the Survival: Soup to Nuts Series, part I is a video, click here if you missed it.
Once the lights go out, whether from an earthquake, tornado, hurricane, power outage, etc., understanding the dynamics of a 72 hour emergency are the first steps towards self-reliance.
Understanding a 72 hour disaster properly requires that you have the answers to two basic questions, what type of emergency am I likely to face and how am can I prepare for this type of disaster? Survival is like a battle, it’s all about knowing what your adversary is going to do before they do it and having a response prepared.

Nearly everyone makes the mistake of trying to find a list of things to buy to survive a generic emergency. Almost no one sets out preparing for the emergency most likely to befall them nor do they understand the mechanics of their human existence in surviving that emergency. What are the answers to the question “what emergency am I most likely to face? Are earthquakes common to your area? Hurricanes? Tornadoes? Forest fires? A Long Winter Power Outage? Each of these natural disasters requires different methods of preparation and response. Some of these emergencies will require evacuation; some will require sheltering in place. Some emergencies like a long power outage in the middle of winter may be just as much about property preservation as it is survival. Most of you probably have the likelihood of dealing with multiple types of emergencies, hence keeping your 72 hour lifeline mobile.
It is your job to identify the most probable scenarios that you face, dissect the mechanics of the event and devise the best courses of action.
US Disaster Risk Map
For example, In my area I don’t have to worry much about earthquakes or hurricanes, but tornadoes and floods are common. Each has their own unique properties and solutions for dealing with them. Tornados can be quick and deadly. Since tornados are common in my area and can happen in an instant, it is just as important where I keep my gear as what gear I have on hand. Of the probable disaster situations I might face, the tornado leaves me the least time to respond, so I keep my gear where I and the gear are likely to survive this event, in the basement.
