Three Most Useful Gun, Axe and Knife for Beginning Survivalists

• Dont even think about a gun until you have taken some handling classes from different people.
• Rem 870 12 gauge, Mora Knife, Estwing axe. They are all you need and will last a lifetime with proper care. Skip the .22 LR ammo is too scarce. You can reload 12 gauge yourself.
• .22 is not a scarce commodity…..it can be found rather easily and when I do I buy 1000rnds at a time. Remember the key is to be lightweight…carrying reloading equipment and all the supplies would hardly be practical in a survival scenario.
• Instead of the axe I would suggest a Sven folding saw. There are many good choices for knives (Becker BK-2, possibly a Buck Reaper) and also include a Leatherman Multitool. For the gun, I cannot argue with those who have suggested the 12 ga pump but to travel lighter I would suggest the Savage Model 42 22LR/.410 combination gun.
• Single shot 12Ga and the “adapters” to utilize a variant caliber. It’s almost a failure proof firearm in a caliber that is terminal for most game and for defense. Gransfors Bruks small forest Axe. Sure it’s pricey in relation to the some of the options out there but it might just be the last axe you need to buy. Finally the knife is seriously a matter of tastes , but a good “first choices” is a Morakniv Companion in a high-carbon steel. It’s not overly pricey, will help you develop the skills to keep a knife up, high carbon steel for firestarting… All the folks advising this AR whatever and M whatever …great firearms but the main point of SURVIVAL is AVOIDING a conflict and most folks with these whizbang rifles have a false sense of competence. Frankly throw in a decent “10 pump” .22 cal air rifle and a rod/reel/tacklebox and you have the basis of a decent grocery getter system.
• “best gun” is going to be a difficult call ar eyou talking about home defense? survival in woods? best for SHTF? or just all around 1 gun? for me if i’m buying one gun to do all of the above i’m buying a fullsize 9 mm or a shotgun. as for best knife in midrange price i’d say a becker bk2 or if a little bit more money can be spent an esee 6 for all around use. as for axe i dont think there is much difference just get a decent steel i’d recommend anything with decent carbon content and a durable handle
• Training. Invest in proper training first with qualified instructors.
• And from your training you’ll figure out what fits you and your skill level. The more you know the less you’ll need.
• Depends on your budget, but if you’re like “the rest of us”, I’d start with the knife and work your way up. Start saving for the higher priced items.
