Ammo: How Much Is Enough When Carrying for Self Defense?

Ammo: How Much Is Enough When Carrying for Self Defense?

Michigan Open Carry

Michigan --(Ammoland.com)-  When I get down to 1,000 rounds of any caliber, I consider myself out of ammo for that caliber.

However, that’s not what I’m talking about here. When carrying a gun for self-defense, how much ammo should you carry on you? How much is enough? How much is too much?

Let’s start with the easy question first. If you ever find yourself in a self-defense situation, you’ll quickly realize that you can never have too much spare ammunition.

No survivor of a gunfight has ever said, “I wish I hadn’t carried those extra magazines.”

Should one really bother carrying spare ammunition? The simple – and only – answer is emphatically “Yes!” I have heard and read more people than I care to remember state that they only carry a small compact semi-auto or revolver, no spare ammunition, and laughingly say “if I can’t get it done in six rounds, something’s wrong” or “I deserve what I get” or something equally absurd.

So how much ammo do you need? The fact of the matter is, you will never know how many rounds you need until you need them. You might read someplace that “statistically” the average self-defense encounter involves only two or three rounds fired. The problem is that “statistically” the standard deviation is so large that the average is a pretty meaningless number. It sure would suck to fire your six rounds only to find out you needed a few more.

“If you knew you were going to be in a gunfight, what would you carry?”

“If I knew I was going to be in a gunfight, I wouldn’t go!”

One year ago this month, a man named Paul Slater broke into a Georgia woman’s house while her husband was at work and chased her and her two children into a crawl space leading to their attic. When he opened the access door and attempted to enter the attic after them, she emptied her .38 revolver in his direction, hitting her attacker five times in the face and torso. That’s pretty good shooting by anyone’s standards, much less for a frightened woman crouching in a confined space trying to protect her two young boys. That didn’t kill him. She told him to stop or she would shoot him again, knowing that it was an idle threat as her gun was now empty. But fortunately for the family he did stop his attack that day, and after the mother and her sons ran past him to get away he was able to leave the house and drive away. He lived to stand trial.

But what if she had not been as accurate? What if he hadn’t stopped his attack? What if he hadn’t been alone? The woman’s revolver was empty, having hit Slater five times out of the six she fired. She no longer had a weapon sufficient to defend herself with from her attacker who was armed with a crowbar, and had Slater had an accomplice that day, the newspaper story of the attack likely would have read entirely differently.

In a firearms online forum I read a story of a man who had his own self-defense encounter while out one evening. Fortunately for him it turned out okay, but that night caused him to rethink his “six shots is enough” strategy and he traded in his carry revolver for a high-capacity semiautomatic and two spare magazines. He was so shaken up about the “what-if” possibilities that he determined to never be in that same position again.

If you are carrying a semi-auto, there are additional reasons for carrying spare magazines besides the extra ammunition capacity. If you are unfortunate enough to begin experiencing failures, you can drop your gun’s magazine and insert a new one.

If you become engaged in a protracted fight, but experience a lull in the action, or even if you are just pausing and covering while your lone attacker is down, you can quickly perform an administrative reload by dropping your partially-loaded magazine and inserting a fresh one, and you are once again working with a fully loaded gun with one already in the chamber and no need to rack the slide. And if your pistol doesn’t have a magazine disconnector, you can still cover the threat with an operable weapon while you reload.

In any event, if you are carrying a single stack pistol that only holds six, seven, or eight rounds, you can see how advantageous it would be to trade a magazine with maybe only a round or two left in it for a fresh one rather than wait until the threat resumes, and then trying to reload an empty gun while avoiding becoming a bullet sponge.

Revolver Speed Loader

One suburban cop by the name of Tim Gramins now carries 145 rounds of 9mm ammunition on his person on the job, as he says, “every day, without fail.” That is because he survived an encounter with an attacker that would not go down, even though he was shot 14 times with .45 ACP — six of those hits in supposedly fatal locations. Gramins had to fire 33 times to get those 14 hits. And even then his attacker survived the ambulance ride.

So, how much spare ammunition should one carry?
Maybe 145 rounds sounds excessive, but Gramins says it’s not paranoia, but rather preparation. We would do well to pay attention to these stories and the hundreds more just like them. Gun magazines and police departments are full of tales where the bad guy was shot multiple times and was still able to seriously injure or kill the good guy. Don’t depend on one or two shots being enough to stop a threat. Don’t assume a lone attacker. If you are not carrying spare magazines, you should consider carrying at least one, and probably two if you’re carrying a single-stack. In my opinion, if you are openly carrying your pistol, there’s really no need to conceal your spare magazines, and it’s just as easy to carry two spares as it is one. If you carry a revolver, carry a couple of full speed loaders. It’s better to be prepared than, well, not prepared.

Remember, no survivor of a gunfight has ever wished he had gone into the fight with less ammunition.

“When I get down to 1,000 rounds of any caliber, I consider myself out of ammo for that caliber.”

      That’s because you’re a sociopath.

Only a commie would make a moronic statement such as yours, gk. We have a God given right to self defense and no rooster sucking liberal traitor such as you is going to take it away form us.

        • AMERICA HAS RISEN

          You are an idiot.

      • greenghost

You probably never had much experience with guns. When I just did hunting small game. I only had a couple boxes of ammo and it was ussually plenty. But when I started doing target shooting I found out you can quickly go through hundreds of rounds of ammo in a single sitting. It would be easy to go through 1000 rounds of ammo target shooting in a single day or even less than a day.

I know your number is twice as much as the DHS has ordered :)

1 maybe 2 rounds should be sufficient. Who are you defending against? If you need more than this, you are in trouble.

      • Ghost Prime

capt, put another dime in that drugstore pony you are sitting on. You are way out of your league.

Here I got the dime that you need

You guys completely misunderstand. The government is stocking up for us. As the paratroopers in the D day invasion were advised. shoot the enemy and take theirs, they will keep you supplied and you don’t have to carry as much.

        • oldfatguy

I don’t think this is true. The US used different ammo for the rifles, carbines and pistols than the Germans did. Their ammo would never have worked in our weapons, or ours in theirs…

    • ichabodcrane

There will never be enough ammo the US military will be turning on citizens in this country!

I guess CaptAmerica never had to deal with a maniac on PCP who was shot over 2 dozen times (in vital spots also) and kept on coming.

Remember Cole Younger, of the Jesse James-Younger family gangs of the 1870s? He was shot 11 times in the Northfield, Minnesota bank raid. He survived. According to historical texts, Cole Younger was shot over 45 times in his lifetime (Civil War, robbing banks, outlaw, etc.)

So, how many bullets were fired at Cole Younger to hit him 45 times (or even 11 times)???

    • klikmaus

CaptAmerica…. If one is in the position of even CONSIDERING use of a firearm… they are in trouble. Better safe than sorry….
      Or dead.

There is no amount of ammo that can possibly be enough. You must carry just as much as you can at any time, up to your own body weight if possible.
In a true firefight situation, you can be stuck behind a pile of innocent civilian corpses for hours with God knows how many assailants pinning you down in a volley of their own bullets.
The only way to be truly safe is to carry as much firepower as you can hold. Get rid of whole idea of a safety, because you can be shot and killed before you even get off your first shot.
The only way to be safe is to shoot first, and keep firing. Running out of ammo should not be an option.
Be sure to keep your Amazon account current, so you can get an emergency drone delivery of fresh ammo at the site.

Quick fact check on the story you mention about Paul Slater breaking into the home and being shot. You said 1 year ago this month. We are well into February, this invasion occurred on January 6, 2013.
And I will tell you, I was so sick of reading all the comments that it’s too bad that he did not die because this woman would have had to live with that for the rest of her life that she killed a man. It does not matter if he deserved to die or not, and it does not matter how justified she was in shooting him, she would have to life with the fact that she killed a man.

On the ammo thing, I carry a clip in the gun with 12 rounds and 2 spare clips for a total of 36 rounds. Is that enough? I pray to God that I never have to find out, but realistically, how much ammo can one really carry? I suppose I could carry 4, 6 or even 8 clips, but it’s hard enough to conceal the gun and the 2 spare clips.

    • TonysTake

Don’t mind GK. it is a liberal troll. It gets paid to act stupid.

Dan is correct on several points. 1000 rounds is what you should have on-hand at all times. Buy extra if you wish to go plinking or target shooting. If you take out of your stock, replace it as soon as possible. Rotate your stock every few years to keep it fresh.

For all my semi-automatic weapons, I have a minimum of five magazines. The main reason is that when I go shooting, I go to shoot, not to reload. When I carry, it’s one mag in the gun and two extra. For my revolver, a 5 shot, I carry two speed loaders.

The question that needs to be answered is why not carry the extra ammo? If it is uncomfortable or the extra bulk and weight will slow you down, then by all means, leave it at home. If it doesn’t pose a problem, then by all means, carry extra.

    • greenghost

How much is too much? You might need to move fast so if your carrying so much that is slows you down its too much.

    • liberal army veteran

five bullets is pleanty. If an intruder come in and you are not able to stop them with you martial art or other fighting skills you can use your firearm. Five bullets is more than enough. Once you run out go buy another five rounds. Simple. If everyone does this we won’t see mass murders anymore.

    • Rufus Juice

UNLIKELY she’ll be charged with anything.

UNLIKELY????? How about we give her a national holiday for taking down a repeated menace to society waste? I would personally lead the group of people standing in the way of her arrest.

Breaks into a house……through not one, not two, but three locked doors?

Celebration is in order ~ thank you ma’am.

    • Dave

With 14+ years in Law Enforcement I always carry at a minimum 1 extra magazine but the norm is 2.

This gives me anywhere from 14 to 21 rounds of .45 cal rounds to toss towards the bad guy.

When I shot competition I was routinely carrying 6 spares

    • proudvietvet58

Thank God this lady knew how to properly use a hand gun! She literally saved her and her children’s lives!

Notice to all Criminals, there is only ONE home on our 8 mile long road that does NOT have any guns. Come and try to figure which one it is :) PLEASE

    • oldshooter

It was an axiom in my old Viet Nam days that you couldn’t have too much ammunition unless you were drowning or on fire.

    • Neanderthal

To me it has become very simple, I buy a loaf of bread and a truck load of Ammo to preserve my bread and the bacon :)

    • RompingWillyBilly

Good information. But we have the right to arms for the reason of killing the tyrants in our government when such a need arises. And arms don’t just mean fire arms. In some places around the world, people strap bombs to themselves. Point is, the right to arms isn’t just a legal right, but it is a natural right.
In comparison to a legal civil right, a natural right has nothing to do with political opinion or anything having to do with epistemology (the cognitive). Indeed, no such thing as epistemology existed during the time of John Locke. Instead, a natural right literally reduced down on the physical level to the soul. So, for the government to question the peoples natural right to arms is tantamount to raping another’s soul or stumbling up the children of God.
As it isn’t possible to violate a natural right, then the best the government can achieve in such evil-doing is persecute.

    • MSG Chicken

Funny, I never heard of snipers having to empty their rifle to kill somebody. ONE SHOT ONE KILL.

If you have to fire 150 rounds to kill somebody, perhaps you should aim correctly first? I never heard of anyone surviving a brain kill, have you?

    • AMERICA HAS RISEN

Americans should be allowed guns period.

      • TombRaider

Amen Brother! Americans should be allowed to own guns period!

        • AMERICA HAS RISEN

Na I changed my mind. Americans are NOT allowed a gun.
If I could rewrite the law I would make it compulsory that Americans MUST own a minimum of two guns each. One must be a hand gun and the other a machine gun.

          You ask me why?
So they can kill each other.

      • jc

Thanks but you live in Mexico…you don’t have a say.

    • TombRaider

I believe this really depends on the situation doesn’t it?

For personal home defense I believe 1 full magazine should be sufficient. Keep in mind that you’re defending your home against an intruder and not engaged in a firefight that could last for hours.

Outside the home is a different story. 150 to 200 rounds isn’t at all overkill, no pun intended, but remember, real life isn’t the movies and you should concentrate on neutralizing the target quickly and efficiently..

    • COCONUT

And you’re lucky – you’re the LAST MAN STANDING!! Youppie! Now what the hell to you do next??

    • gruntjust4u

The answer is you can never have enough ammo, what may hinder you are those that can actually field a weapon and use it to it’s capability. If the government is buying up all the 5.56x454NATO and 40cal it can get its hands on what do you think the natural choice of firearm and ammo should be? EXACTLY. If you live in a community that prides itself on being self sufficient, helping your neighbors in time of need and ready to defend one another then you can never have enough ammo.

    • Terry L Smith

      I can tell you this:

In post WW2 U.S. military manuals, whether with the 1911 pistol OR .38 Special revolver, the manual stated “two reloads” (my emphasis).

That meant two extra magazines for the pistol, or, enough revolver ammunition to charge the cylinders full, two times.

That would be 7 (magazine inserted) plus (magazines on person) 7 x 2, for a total of 21 cartridges.

For the revolver, that would be a full cylinder, 6 plus 12 cartridges, for a total of 18.

For todays’s pistols that can carry more than 7 rounds, (Kommunist Kalifornia excluded), you might end up with just 2 magazines with more than 20 rounds.

For those that carry .357 revolvers, you might be carrying an 8 catridge cyklinder model, which by the rule of thumb would state you need to carry 24 cartridges.

For those of us who carry a ‘J-frame style’, the numbers work out to be either 15 or 18 cartridges, depending on manufacturer.

But, to not carry at least 1 reload? I suggest for revolvers, even a simple “strip” with a spaced pair of cartridges (load two or load four) is a viable option.

Lastly, my life is mine, and mine alone, to live or to forfeit, and no human that is elected is going to tell me what to do with my life, unless he is willing to meet me personally under a big oak tree on a foggy morning.

It is ok for you not to like guns or not to have them, that is your right and no one will infringe upon that. but If I am close by and you are in trouble, I will have that gun and ammo to protect you from your aggressor. If I or someone like me is not around when you need that help, you are on your own. I also hope that never happens in your life or to any other human being, however the odds are not in your favor. Statistically speaking. I wish you well
