How to Store Batteries for Emergency Use

One of the most important items for preppers is batteries. You need batteries for your flashlight, radio, gadgets, etc. There is a great possibility that there will be no electricity when tragedy strikes, so it is a good idea to store batteries for emergency use. Do not just store batteries; make sure that you choose the necessary batteries that you need. You should be knowledgeable about batteries also.

Here are some tips on how to store batteries for emergency use:

Choosing the right battery to store

Alkaline, Lithium, Non-Lithium and Nickel are the most common type of batteries. Choosing the type of battery that you will be storing can be confusing, considering that there are a lot of different types of batteries. Knowing which battery to store can be done easily when you make a list of all the things that you use every day, like cellphone, car, laptops, etc.  Make sure to read carefully and understand the labels and the date code on batteries.

Storing your batteries in a right way

Knowing how to store batteries the right way is important. Batteries usually lose their strength with age. Temperature can also affect the batteries; most batteries require a storage temperature of 59 °F.  Storing batteries in hot temperature can shorten their life. Storing batteries in a freezer can slow its discharge rate. Excessive moisture is not good for batteries, because moisture increases the rate of corrosion.

Store your batteries in a dark, cool, dry place. Remove the batteries from your devices or equipment when not in use to prolong the life of the battery. Devices or equipment will continue to suck power from the battery even if they are turned off.

Choose rechargeable batteries

A rechargeable battery is a good alternative for a disposable battery. Using rechargeable battery can save you money. You don’t have to consume, use, and dispose batteries as often when you use rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries are available for AA, AAA, and D. However, these kinds of batteries have a limited number of recharges. If you have reached the maximum number of recharges you have to change the battery already.

Solar powered charging device

When there is no electricity for you to charge your batteries, you can use solar powered charging devices.
