Planning for Canning- Tips To Get You Started

Planning for canning season takes time, and a little effort.  But, just think of the end results!  Fresh salsa, crisp pickles and knowing that you grew it all yourself.  As we are all dreaming of summer, take some time and plan out what you are interested in producing.  Here are a few suggestions to get you from seed to can over the next few months.

We live all over the country so there is no set date as to when you should start planting your seeds.  Even an hour’s drive can make a difference as to how early one can plant outside.  A person in Chicago can plant seedlings outside 2 weeks before someone in Madison, WI.  It all depends on what zone you live in.

A good suggestion is to check and see when the last frost of the season is projected to happen in your area.  This will give you an idea as to when you would be able to plant your seedlings outside.  With this date in mind, I usually start the seeds inside about 8 weeks prior to the projected last frost of the season.

Another suggestion is this shopping list that you should keep an eye out for over the next few months. Picking up a few items at a time will make your canning time easier.

Jars:

1/2 pint jars for jellies
Pint jars for salsas, beets, and stewed tomatoes
Quart jars for sauces and pickles

Bath Canning Pot

Gallon Jugs of Vinegar  (used for pickling, salsas, as a cleaning agent, and is a great natural weed killer)

Canning funnel

Canning tongs

Mrs. Wages canning mixes.  They are all natural and provide the directions as to how much produce you will need.  They are very good, and easy to use!  When you see them, buy them.  Once canning season starts, you are not going to be able to find these mixes.

Containers

Potting Soil

Seeds

Now onto the Veggies themselves:
