Training Your Dog for Survival
During an emergency situation you can’t just leave your dog behind, and it is wonderful that a lot of people will never leave their dogs behind. Training your dog for survival can be beneficial to you and your family.
Training your dog would not be that hard as dogs have natural survival instincts. Your dog can assist you in any emergency situation, and she will let you know if there is a threat by barking. Training your dog can mean the difference between life and death in any dangerous situation.
Teaching your dog several commands like when to bark or when to be quiet is easy. It is important to teach your dog when to be quiet, especially when you don’t want other people to know your location. But if you are in a situation where you need help, you can send your dog to get some help.
In training your dogs, it is important to have patience. Frustration and anger will lead to unsuccessful dog training. Make your training sessions fun and enjoyable.
The two most important commands to teach your dog is the “Speak” command and the “Quiet” command. Teach these two commands first, twice a day for 5 to 10 minutes.
How to teach your dog the “Speak” command?
Teaching your dog this command can be hard at the start. To be able to teach this command, you have to get your dog to bark by citing a situation. Knocking on the door is an example of a situation. If somebody knocks on your door and your dog didn’t bark, say “Speak” in a commanding voice. If your dog barks immediately give her treats and praise her by saying “Good dog” or “Good girl/boy”.
Repeat the process until you stop using the knock-on-the-door situation to get your dog to bark. And if you see that your dog has mastered the “Speak” command, it is time for you to teach her the “Quiet” command.
How to teach your dog the quiet command?
The first thing to do when teaching your dog the “Quiet” command is to put her in a leash. After that give her the speak command. If she barks give her a treat. Repeat the process 4-5 times. After 4 to 5 times of barking, tug on the leash and give her the “Quiet” command, you will have to do this quickly. After giving the command and she stops barking immediately reward her with some treats and praise. Repeat this process for 5-10 minutes then take a break.
Repeat the same process until your dog can follow the “Quiet” command even without the leash. As your dog progresses, stop giving your dog treats when you are doing the “Speak” command and give her a treat when you are doing the “Quiet” command.
