DIY Remedies: Off-grid Cures for Common Ailments
Stocking up on food, water, meds, survival tools and gear can help you through a sudden crisis or emergency. But aside from having survival items stashed and ready when you need them, having the right kind and amount of knowledge to make use of whatever you have around you and whatever you can find is also very important. In this post, I’ll share some remedies to common ailments that you can find around your home or that you can include in your preps.
A lot of stuff that you can find in your kitchen cabinet can cure common ailments. These items are often even more effective than the medicines that you buy from drug stores. You can save more money and time in using these off-grid cures for your common ailments. You can also avoid any possible side-effects of the medicines that you buy on drug stores.
Here are nine food items that you can use to cure common ailments. Some of these items are already in your kitchen, some items are perishable but you can put them to your refrigerator so that they will be available for a long-term use.
Cherries
Study shows that dark red cherries or fresh cherry juice can be helpful in relaxing and in preparing for sleep. Cherries contain melatonin that can help regulate your body’s sleep-wake cycle.
Dark Chocolate
Did you know that you can use dark chocolate to calm a cough? Dark chocolates contain a compound called theobromine. This compound can block the action of the sensory nerves which causes the coughing reflex.
You can chew the leaves of fresh basil to relieve a dry cough.
Garlic and Honey
You can use garlic and honey to soothe your sore throat. Garlic contains antimicrobial, antiviral, antibiotic properties and a powerful antioxidant. To soothe your sore throat using garlic, all you have to do is mix at least six pressed garlic cloves with a glass of warm water. Use the mixture to gargle twice a day. The garlic juice will help fight bacteria and soothe inflamed tissue.
If you don’t have garlic at home you can use honey. Just add one tbsp. of honey, cinnamon, and a small slice of ginger into boiling water. Wait until the solution is cold enough for you to drink.
Ginger
Ginger can be used to ease nausea, because it containsgingerols and shogoals that can help ease queasiness. Study shows that ginger can be used to heal seasickness, morning sickness, and stomach ache.
Add 2 grams of fresh gingerroot into a boiling water to make a tea. Taking more than 4 grams of ginger per day can irritate the stomach lining, so never take 4 grams of ginger per day.
Lemon
Drinking lemon juice can help you fight off a cold. Lemon is a good source of Vitamin C. To make a lemon juice all you have to do is squeeze the juice of a half lemon into a cup or glass, after squeezing all the juice drop the peel and the remaining pulp into the glass or cup. Add a boiling water and honey, and then stir it.
Lemon juice can also be used to fight off bad breath. Just gargle with a small cup of lemon juice. The lemon juice will kill the bacteria that are causing the foul odor. After gargling, rinse your mouth with a small amount of plain sweetened yogurt.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal can help you heal dry skin. Put at least three cups of oatmeal into a dry sock and then wrap the open end with rubber band. Drop the sock with oatmeal into your warm bath, soak it for 15 minutes. Oats have aventhramides which are helpful in reducing skin irritation, it can also neutralize odor in our mouth.
Olive Oil
Olive oil can be used to treat minor burns, sunburn, and insect bites. All you have to do is apply a light layer of olive oil to your wound and leave it uncovered. Olive oil helps ease the pain, irritation, and itching, it can also speed up the healing process of your wound. You can also use olive oil for babies.
Peppermint
Peppermint can be used to fight off stomach ache. Some of you may have tried drinking a cup of peppermint tea or eating a peppermint candy to fight off stomach ache.
A more effective way to fight off stomach ache is by combining peppermint and carrots to make a healthy drink. Boil 4 cups of water, add 4 slices of carrots, and add one tsp. of dried peppermint or you can use one peppermint teabag. Keep the water boiling for 15 minutes or until the carrots are soft, make sure to adjust the heat to medium low. After that, blend the mixture using your blender.
If you still want to add flavor and antioxidants to your mixture, try adding a pinch of ginger or a small amount of lemon juice.
Sugar
A spoonful of sugar can help you stop hiccups. The sugar will help reset the irritated nerve that is causing spasms of the diaphragm that cause hiccups.
Try checking your kitchen cabinet if you have these off-grid cures. You might need them someday to cure your ailments.
