Preparing for a Food Crisis

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Food crisis is a very common problem around the globe. There are countries and regions around the world that are going through a food crisis. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, there are about 870 million people suffering from chronic undernourishment from 2010 to 2012. 852 million of these hungry people are from the developing countries, and about 16 million of these hungry people are from the developed countries including the US.

Have you ever experienced skipping 3 or 4 meals in a day or a long time hunger? Did you experience fatigue or dizziness during those times? Fatigue and dizziness are the first general signs of malnutrition. Not eating for days will make your condition worse and you will begin to lose weight. Starvation can lead to mental disability, physical disability, and death.

It is possible to survive without food for a month, but a food crisis can last for months and even years. Preparing for food crisis can be tough sometimes. Reading and researching some proper guidelines will help you prepare for a food crisis.

Stockpiling food is one of the best ways to survive a food crisis. When stockpiling food you have to consider these 3 things:

1. Buy only the food that you need or like to eat

2. Find a place to properly stockpile your food

3. What are the foods that you want to buy and how much would they cost?

Here are the foods that you need to consider when stockpiling.

Bottled water– you can survive without food for more than a month, but you will not survive without water for more than 4 days. An average person should consume at least half gallon of water every day.

Salt– you can use salt for curing beef, adding flavor to your food, and preserving foods.

Supplements– you will need multivitamins and minerals

Peanut Butter– this food can last for 5 years and it is a good source of protein, fat, and calories.

Fish– eat fish to keep your immune system strong. Fish is a good source of vitamin D and fatty acids. You can also store dried, canned, or frozen fish.

Powdered Milk – has a lot of nutrients like protein, carbohydrate, calcium, and potassium. It is also a good source of amino acids, vitamins and minerals.

Rice – can last for 10 years, if stored properly.

Pasta–easy to store and you can make different pasta dishes.

Flour & whole grains–one of the cheapest items you can buy per-pound basis. It is better to stock whole grains because it preserves better.

Nuts & trail mixes–are healthy and high-energy foods.

Beans – are high in protein. Store beans in a cool, dry and dark place.

Canned Meat–is a good source of protein.

Lard

Honey– a good source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Canned Fruit & Vegetables–are a good source for vitamins.

Dried fruits– contains dietary fiber and potassium.

Many people are skeptical that a major food crisis is ever going to happen. But the truth is, there are a lot factors that can trigger this event including:

  • National and international conflicts
  • Disease outbreaks
  • Economic collapse
  • Natural disasters
  • Terror attack/EMP attack

When a food crisis happens, keep in mind that food from the grocery stores will disappear immediately; in 3 days or less. People will rush to stores to buy food and other items they think they need. It is very important that you start preparing now and not wait until the crisis happens.
