Actually, a MUCH-BETTER radio system exists as a stepping stone to HAM, and I am NOT even referring to CB (unfortunately, a relatively dead radio frequency spectrum).
I’m talking about GMRS. In a real crisis, radio communication will be extremely important. That said, few have HAM (2, 6, 10, etc. meter bands), and who really needs to be sitting in Lubbock Texas and make an emergency call to Wilmington North Carolina or Tokyo, Japan? No, I need to yell at someone in Odessa or Midland, or maybe over to Clovis New Mexico. I don’t need to make thousand-mile communiques, I need to know if you have seen water lately, or if there is a bad storm brewing between you and me.
Herein lies a great thing that few have built, developed, or even tried to understand. The GMRS frequencies.
The little handheld radios that you see bubble packed at Wallie World, or Radio Hack, those little FRS/GMRS radios that promise ‘up to 35-mile range’. Yeah, we all think we know them. We think they are cute little 1-mile digital handheld walkie talkies. The band, as a whole, is a LOT MORE than that, but few have researched it to understand it better.
For $85, you can get a 5-year FCC license for the full GMRS spectrum. Forget that little 0.5-watt FRS side of the dial, go to the full 4-watts on the other side. BUT WAIT, with the license, you can operate and use repeaters – 50-watt repeaters (akin in range to 500-watt or more 10-meter Base Stations on the HAM side).
Now, with a couple of repeaters in place within a dozen miles of your location, and a clear line-of-sight, you can reach a hundred miles or more with GMRS. There really is no ‘test’ for the license, only fill out the card, send a check, get your license worth 5-years of time. You are now ‘in the GMRS loop’.
More importantly, when catastrophe hits, and ‘Johnny Innocent and his family of 4′ stumble across radios in an abandoned car, or home, or store – chances are, he’s going to find those handheld GMRS, not a HAM radio (and even if he did find a HAM set, the chances of a working system, with tuned antenna are like finding needles in multiple haystacks), he will have a GMRS that you can actually hear, scan-for, and communicate with.
HAM doesn’t help if no one is using it locally. You might as well have a pinto bean can and some string. GMRS is used by hunters, hikers, motorcyclists, campers, RV’ers and so many more on a daily basis. A small GMRS club in your area will do a thousand-fold more good than all the HAM talk you care to discuss. For $100 you are deep into GMRS country (radio AND license), and for $1000, you are most-likely running a repeater or two, as well.
HAM can NEVER claim this economy, or utilization level.
