Why were people such as Helen Keller, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein and others able to succeed despite disabilities and a poor education?

Einstein was told he was an idiot and failed at math as was Edison who became deaf in one ear early on and he never finished school. Ms. Keller suffered from being blind and deaf yet went on to become extraordinarily successful.

These folks didn’t have the advantage of our ‘modern’ educational system and all of the smart tools at our disposal. So-called deprived children today are given much more in terms of educational resources, school meals and food stamps and other social necessities and yet, often remain mired in poverty and crime.

For example, more than 1,000 elementary aged children in Detroit’s inner city schools had laptop computers donated to them. Within a year most of them had mysteriously vanished [sold or stolen].

It doesn’t take a village as Mrs. Clinton wrote. Helen Keller didn’t have a village behind her [except to taunt her], she had Anne Sullivan to guide and teach her.

Despite 100s of government programs, too many of our young fail to reach their potential. [Under our current nonsensical society, the USA would never have made it out of the Old West as just about anything related to personal independence has been outlawed].

It is my opinion government programs seldom steer children in the right direction. So what does work?

Most often, from everything I read, a child succeeds because of a strong parent, teacher or other mentor-type figure in their life. People laugh today about how life was in the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s when the norm was a two-parent family and kids finished school and they participated in physical activities rather than sit in front of a TV, video game or computer screen all day.

Parents back then were more involved. The cost of government and living the ‘good’ life created too many two-parent income earners which has hurt our children and the nation.  The government wrongly assumed too many ‘nanny state’ roles and it has not worked well.
