It’s time for republicans to put down their hideous trucker caps and for liberals to dial back the outrage.  Despite recent empirical evidence to the contrary, there will be no President Trump.  Not this election, not ever.  The fact is that he’ll never even get the Republican nomination.  Three reasons to dial back the hatred and get real.

Check Your Poll

If we’ve learned anything in presidential politics it is this.  Polling more than a year out really doesn’t matter, but it can send a message.  Everyone knows this so they’d rather be interesting and provocative when polled than intellectually consistent.  The vast majority of poll respondents only say they back Trump to stir the pot, few would actually select him in a primary or caucus.  So why do they lie?  To send that message.  Most believe the old adage that the enemy of my enemy is my friend.  If Trump can consistently tweak the Republican Party leadership, the NY Times and liberals everywhere he’s just hit a trifecta.  It makes for good TV, heartburn for the Boehner set and hand wringing by our opponents.  What’s not to love?

He’s Either a Lapsed Presbyterian or a Functional Atheist

You can’t win the presidency of the United States running on the Republican ticket without the evangelical vote. This is a fact.  You can barely win it WITH the evangelical vote.  The electoral map is a disaster for the Republicans, and without the support the religious sect who are organized, engaged and reliable, you’ll never win.  Donald will never capture that group in an election.  He’s not one of them and unlike W. he doesn’t even speak their language.  Donald is egoistical, shrill, he’s got moral baggage, and perhaps most damning, he’s pragmatic.  Evangelicals see the world as black and white and seek leaders who govern based on principles, not public opinion polls and certainly not with their gut.  Romney represented the former, McCain and Trump the latter.

The Game Is Rigged

The biggest issue is perhaps the least reported.  The Republican Party establishment holds all the cards in this process.  They are also the group most disillusioned with Trump and his ability to water down their brand.  Presently they are letting Trump play out his recent rise, but if he were ever in a position to actually win the nomination, the GOP would simply change the rules.  They’ve done it before.  Primaries and caucuses would be replaced by nominating committees.  Super delegates would materialize out of nowhere and a Trump run would be snuffed.   They know their party is on oxygen and that Trump is poised to pull the plug.  So if backed into a corner, they will do exactly like they’ve done in many state races, they would step in and flush him away.

So What Now?

Am I telling you all of this because I have an ax to grind and Trump bothers me?  Heck no, I find him the best thing that has happened to the Republican Party in years.  I cheered and lauded his announcement even before he made it.  I tell you this because the Republicans do need to pick a nominee, and as you spend your days re-tweeting the latest incendiary rant made by Donald, you should spend your nights researching the real candidates.  There is a civil war in the GOP and we all need to take sides.  Do you stand for the party of big business that caves on every issue save for taxes, and grows government just as fast as the democrats?  Or do you support a full spectrum conservative wave that promises to govern on principles and finally get our fiscal and moral house in order?  The choice is really that stark.  There is no middle and the Trump sideshow should not distract us.  Unless we coalesce behind one of the real options that sideshow may be all we have.  And inevitably America will remain decidedly un-great.
