Relocating Before the SHTF

The So-Called Safe Places Are Safe Now But What About When The SHTF

What about when the SHTF, will those so-called safe places the online experts are telling you to head for now be safe once a disaster strikes.

Survival books and articles online are telling everyone who will listen that they need to get out of the cities, get out of dodge, and head for the wilderness now. Find a small community as quickly as possible, and move there quickly is another recommendation you will find. There are lists scattered about the Internet proclaiming the safest places to be once the SHTF, how do they know though. How do you know?

We as humans can somewhat predict what may happen in the future based on events in the past, but this is by no means a guarantee because none of us have ever experienced a 12.0 magnitude earthquake, or lived through a comet strike, or survived an asteroid the size of Rhode Island striking earth.

Common sense tells us a lot and being prepared is important, but when it comes to changing your entire lifestyle based on what ifs is a big step, which requires a tremendous amount of planning and resources, mainly financial resources. Fear should have no part in the decision-making, so make sure you don’t give into it.

The authors’ often times lead us to believe that they are currently living in survival Utopia and the water is great so jump on in. Ask yourself, what you would do if you found the perfect survival haven. A haven with plenty of water, firewood, perfect weather and soil for raising crops and where the wild game walks up to your back door and commits suicide for your dining pleasure, and where the fish jump in your boat ready for the skillet. Would you tell the world to come on over and share the bounty.

If everyone followed the recommendations, then the problem in the cities would simply be transferred to another location, same stuff different pile. Moving the problem from one location to another is not an answer.

You cannot do something for the sake of doing it, just so you can convince yourself you are preparing for the worst when all you are doing is getting ready to jump from the frying pan into the fire.

Not many would tell the world if they actually had found their Shangri-La, which by definition is an imaginary place that many seek but never find. This, of course, begs the questions why are the so-called experts telling everyone to leave the cities, the urban areas, the “death zones” for greener pastures, places where the online experts supposedly live now. If they don’t live there now what are they basing their recommendations on, how do they know. Maybe they don’t know any more about what may happen than the rest of us, is this possible?

Articles, blogs, and authors of books make you feel less than prepared, make you feel guilty in some cases, if you are not actively trying to relocate before doomsday. If you don’t relocate, you won’t survive seems to be the mantra touted by some online.

Relocating is expensive. It’s not as simple as loading up the wood stove and a few rocking chairs along with the tools to build a new cabin in the back of a wagon. You need to find a new job, pay for the move, eat, and then sleep somewhere. In other words, you will spend a small fortune, and if you can do that now, then you probably have the resources to shelter in place in most cases.

Of course, once disaster strikes, you may have to move, but would it be permanent, would you just up and leave most things behind in hopes of finding your Shangri-La regardless of the situation on the ground. The most likely scenario is that you and the family would move into emergency shelters, or temporary quarters somewhere or find friends and family willing to take you in until you can once again move back to your home.

The best places to live once the SHTF are determined before the SHTF, by people that probably don’t live there now, so how can you be sure the perfect place will be safe once something happens. They are safe now, but what about when it all falls apart, where does that leave you.
