In this part one of a three part series, I will take you through the new comers experience to the One Shepherd Leadership Institute in Missouri. One shepherd is a non-profit organization that teaches leadership through small unit tactics and light fighter infantry training. In addition to that, they are the only civilian organization that I know of that utilizes the MILES system for combat simulation. MILES is the same simulation system that is currently used by the U.S. military in which everything from individual rifleman to armored vehicles and aircraft are equipped and tied in together for simulated combat. Although it’s not a perfect system, MILES is the only one that allows individual users to engage in simulated combat using real weapon systems, firing blank ammunition at opposing forces at REAL combat engagement ranges. How the system works is the laser keys off of the firing of blank ammunition through your rifle. The MILES system is set to match the terminal ballistics of a 5.56mm fired out of your standard M16 and M4 carbine. This is what enables fire fights to take place at 1,2,3,4,500 plus meters away, which is something your typical systems such as paint ball, air soft and Sim rounds cannot offer.

This training institution is more than just a place to take part in simulated war though. This is truly a full blown infantryman experience for men and women who are looking to be challenged both physically and mentally.
