Does unemployment equal terrorism?
On Wednesday an unemployed man by the name of Christopher Cornell was arrested in an apparent plot of terrorism. Christopher Lee Cornell, 20, of Green Township, was arrested on charges of attempting to kill a U.S. government official, authorities said.
Mr. Cornell was an unemployed man who had allegedly planned to detonate pipe bombs at the national landmark and open fire on any employees and officials fleeing after the explosions.
Could unemployment be the cause of more terrorism in America? Let’s take a look at what is happening around the world and how this is now having an effect here in the great old USA!
Let’s first start with what is happening around the world. To understand a terrorist, we must first understand the life of this person before they join the group or movement.
Let’s look at the story of a young man living in a poor village just outside of Mogadishu, in the southern part of Somalia. His name doesn’t really matter because it could be any young man from many parts of the world. The village has experienced a severe draught and that has caused poverty and driven many of the residents to the brink of starvation. Disillusioned by the lack of opportunities, lack of employment and frustrated about his situation, he heads off to the nearest big city which in this case is Mogadishu. He arrives in the big city with big dreams but is soon faced with the fact that there are no jobs and no opportunities and he finds himself homeless and hungry and living in the streets.
After about a year of begging for food and money and living in a tent, he is approached by a man who appears to care and offers to take him to lunch. After some conversation the visit extends into dinner and the kind man offers a warm comfortable place to stay, which the young man accepts. In the morning they talk more over breakfast and he is introduced to some more friends who also seem to care about his situation. The group goes on to explain that the poor mans situation is not his fault but rather the fault of the system he has been forced to live in. He is also told that if he stays with the group, they will care for him and teach him how he can change the system for himself and others like him. The young man now feels he has purpose and direction in his life.
Fast forward to a year later and a car bomb goes off in a crowded shopping area in Mogadishu. That young man we just met has now become a suicide bomber and is responsible for killing 30 people.
So how does this story of a small town kid go from a young man just trying to make it in the world to becoming a terrorist? Quite simply put, its about the wait. The wait for an opportunity, the wait for hope and the wait for employment that never came. What did come was a group who has practiced this form of recruitment over and over again all around the world. You must understand that terrorists are not born, they are created. They are created out of despair and lack of opportunities. The scary thing is that this situation repeats itself over and over again, every day and now is coming to America.
So why are so many home grown terrorist in America found to be unemployed? The answer to our terrorists in the USA may be a direct correlation to our current economic structure and situation. The government reports that there are more jobs than ever and this is true but you need to look a little deeper to see the real problem. There truly are more jobs but they are on the very high end of the wage spectrum and on the very low end of the spectrum. This leaves little room for the average young person in America to have hopes of a better future.
The common thread of these new “home grown” terrorist is that they are unemployed! For many young people in the USA the dream of opportunity, jobs, and wealth are not available to them. They then become angry, frustrated, isolated and feel disenfranchised. This is a dangerous situation and the terrorist groups in the world are now reaching out to them and recruiting them in huge numbers.
By 2030 it is estimated that 3 out of 5 people living in our big cities in America will be under the age of 18. These are exactly the people who are most affected by the lack of jobs and who are experiencing poverty. Let look back again to that city in the beginning of this post, Mogadishu. This city is now responsible for the fastest growing population of terrorists and terrorist groups. In Mogadishu, 70 percent of the young people living in the city suffer from unemployment and lack of availability of education. They pretty much have nothing to do and they blame the system for their situation.
Here is the dangerous part for all of us in America, the correlation between the lack of a future and the blame they place on the “system” they live in. When our young people see no opportunities, no inclusion in the system and a future of poverty, they too are ripe for the picking of these terrorist groups.
It is now time as Americans that we realize that serious changes need to be made to our system to provide more opportunities for our young people or we may soon become the next country that is the new training ground for more terrorists.
Update 1/17/16: It seems things have not gotten better but rather worse. Will our government change after the elections? Could Donald Trump be the answer?
