How To Build Survival Kits You Can Be Proud Of

Many people think of a survival kit as just having your food, water, and first aid.

While this is true and they are very important items that you’ll need…there is SO much more to it than those 3 simple items.

Take this for example, if you’re packing a lunch for your child to take to school, you wouldn’t just put a juice box and some crackers in it, right?
Yes, they will survive on those items, but they could also use a sandwich, maybe some veggie sticks…you get my point.

Don’t be lazy and go halfway.
Take the extra mile and build out your survival kits the way they should be made.

You never know what you may need, so it’s always going to be better to prepare yourself to the fullest.

Keep on going and you’re going to learn step by step how you can create survival kits that you can be proud of and know that you’ve done everything possible that you can to be prepared.

We’re going to break this down into essential items and then suggested items…Keep up!

Before you can build your kit, you’ll definitely need something to hold all of your belongings together.

This could be a backpack, a duffle bag, whatever you want to use.

Since the main purpose is survival, you’ll just want to be sure that you are using something that is travel-friendly.
(A trash bag may hold everything, but that’s not going to be the most practical thing to carry in the event of an emergency or even if you’re hiking.)

Essential items for your survival kit:

1. Water and/or water bottle:

The recommendation is to have one gallon of water per person per day on hand.
If you’re storing for any length of time, it’s suggested to have enough for at least 3 days.

Obviously a water bottle is great to have on hand because this is easily carried and you can always refill if you’re able to.

2. Food:

Have at least 3 days worth of food on hand for each person you’re prepping for.

You’ll want to store non perishable foods such as freeze dried food, long term canned foods, or dehydrated foods. (Anything that you’ll be able to keep for a long period of time)

If you’re storing canned foods, don’t forget your handheld can opener.

3. First Aid Kit:

Make sure it has the essentials like bandages, neosporin, gauze, tweezers, alcohol pads,  etc. It’s better safe than sorry to just have essential first aid items on hand.

Your health is most essential to how well you’ll survive.

4. Fire-Building Supplies:

Believe it or not, being able to build a fire out in the wilderness is essential to your survival.

Not only can it provide warmth, but it can also cook food if need be.
Store a lighter, matches, or any supplies that you know you’ll be able to use to build a fire.

5. Shelter:

If you’re not in the safety of your own home, or you’d have to leave it for any reason, you’ll need to have or seek shelter.

Store a sleeping back, a camping hammock, a tent, or even just a tarp to hang up.
Something that can be easily picked up, moved, and set up.

Now that we’ve gone over the most important items for your kit, we’re going to go over some that are very important and if you’re able to store these or if you have enough room, we recommend that you look into these as well.

* Utility Knife:

Highly important and easy to stow away.

A good quality knife is important in survival circumstances and in protecting yourself.

* Flashlight & Batteries:

Although a fire does provide light, you can’t exactly carry it around everywhere that you may need it.

Having a flashlight and batteries for it on hand will help you be able to move through the night, safely.

* Nylon cords/ropes:

This is another multi-usage item.

This can help you can hang up a tarp, set up traps, help you find your way back to camp, and other endless possibilities.

* Radio:

This could be a hand crank radio or a battery operated radio.

If you’re using this kit for the instance of survival from an emergency, you’ll want some form of radio in order to be up to date on what is happening.

Hearing what is going on will help you determine what moves you need to make in order to ensure your own safety.

* Compass:

Yes, I know we all have a GPS on our cell phones these days, but when that cell phone battery dies and you’re not able to charge the phone and find out where you are…a compass can be handy.

At least you’ll be able to determine the general direction you’re heading and it will help you get on track with where you’re going.

So that was a lot of really great information, right?

Follow our guide to build great survival kits and you’ll be sure to be prepared.

Please keep in mind, that what we have stated you should have doesn’t have to be the ONLY things that you pack in your kit.

If you’ve got the room to bring other essential items that you know you need, add it in!
Our goal was to cover the essential and the most important items that we think should be in a survival kit.

Carry on and create your own survival kit!
You’ll surely be proud of it and proud to be prepared!
