Throughout my life, I’ve lived in some pretty urban environments, and some of those times, I’ve felt that I needed to sharpen my survivalist training so that I could remain sharp for a survival situation. Fortunately, I was always able to take the time to travel to the country to work on my knife skills, go camping, or fishing, but what if you don’t have this option? For this reason, I decided to create this guide about the top 10 cities in the USA where you can practice survivalism.

• New York, NY

I know, I know, New York City is probably the last place that you’d think is survivalist-friendly, right? Believe it or not, New York has several great options for folks that want to learn to rough it. Consider this, Queens and Brooklyn have wide swaths of land that aren’t developed. In the city, you can find campgrounds, urban preparedness classes in Central Park, and even bush skill courses.

• Albuquerque, NM 

Albuquerque is a unique city that blends desert life with a fantastic urban sprawl. Not only does the town have some high buildings and a bustling nightlife, but the city is also surrounded by picturesque mountains that can be used for survival training. In fact, there are several bushcraft and survival schools in the city for anyone to use.

• Seattle, WA

On one end, you have the futuristic-looking space needle; on the other end, you have snow-capped mountains that rise above the city’s impressive skyline. Seattle is a great city to practice survival, especially in rainy conditions. It doesn’t take long to venture out of the city and trek into the wilderness, so take a step out from time to time; just remember to bring a poncho.

Another desert-based city, Las Vegas has more than gambling to enjoy. While there is no city that’s more iconic for gamblers than Vegas, there are also a plethora of tours in the city that are designed to get people out into the surrounding wilderness. You can book a horseback tour, canoe on the various rivers, or even trek through the nearby Grand Canyon.

Atlanta is a great option for those looking to experience a survivalist lifestyle while also living close to the urban life. The city has a good selection of survival-themed clubs, courses, and is also surrounded by deep wilderness that is perfect for camping, fishing, and hunting. In fact, there are even some great bowhunting options around the town since gun hunting is prohibited in Clayton, Cobb, and DeKalb.

If you’re a Florida survivalist that lives in Miami, then you have several great options. Florida is a great wild hog hunting state, and this type of hunting is something of a longstanding tradition around the city. Additionally, the area is near enough to the Everglades that you can even go on an alligator hunting adventure or two; all of this is easily accessible from one of the urbanest cities in Florida.

Topeka is a beautiful city that sits in the seat of Shawnee County. This is a picturesque town that is situated right near the Kansas River, which is a great waterway for fishing things like the “big Kansas catfish” and the walleye, though bottom feeder fish aren’t recommended for consumption from this river, it’s a great way to hone your fishing skills.

In recent years, Detroit has become something of a Mecca for survivalist culture. As a result, many survivalist schools, outdoor adventures, and there are even public lands where a survivalist can hunt. Also, if you enjoy gathering, the morel mushroom has been spotted in many areas around Detroit.

• San Diego, CA

San Diego has some of the best fishing opportunities in the country. Since fishing is one of the key skills to have if you’re a survivalist, there’s really no better option than prime fishing than San Diego. There are a wide variety of lakes to fish, and if you want ocean fish, the city has a ton of piers to cast your line off of.

• Tacoma, WA

The final spot on this list of ten survivalist-friendly cities is Tacoma. This is a very hunter-friendly city and the surrounding wilderness is LOADED with deer to hunt. You can find Columbia Blacktail Deer in high numbers in this area, and they are relatively untapped because of this area being something of a well-kept secret.
