I go out in the woods often by myself, I can not tell you how many times I have had that drop in my gut that you feel when you think your screwed, and lost… How many times have you had friends or relatives show you a expensive GPS system or some kind of mapping APP for your phone for example “On X”. They claim this is the best tool to get you into and out of the best spots.  How many times have you been out of service? Maybe you have one of those expensive hiking GPS’s run low on battery to the point of worry, and you constantly  turn around early from a hunt? Or maybe a constant loss of GPS signal that loses your tracks? Try going back to the basics with a compass!

How to shoot Azimuth- I usually get to the site I want to hunt in my truck, get out and point my back to where I am directly heading, ( My back facing the mountain or ridge. ) Then open the compass, and point it directly at my truck. It will give you a direction with a “degree number” (Example S.E 120Degrees ). The degree number is what you need to remember. Where ever you go up and down the ridges and mountains, If you point your compass at 120 Degrees you will find your truck! No batteries needed! No big brother tracking your every move! Oh did I mention they are either Phosphorescent, or come with Tritium!  Yes they glow in the dark in the worst scenarios!
