From Power Rangers to Firearms; An Interview with Jason David Frank

U.S.A.-(Ammoland.com)- In 1993 Jason David Frank was cast as Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger in the smash hit “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.” For three seasons Frank entertained millions of kids on Fox before the series ended. He returned to the Power Ranger franchise in 2002 as the Red Zeo Ranger. Then again in 2006 as the Black Dino Ranger.

Frank is also an accomplished martial artist. He holds belts in Shōtōkan, Wadō-ryū, Taekwondo, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, and Aikido. He has fought MMA professionally training with UFC lightweight Melvin Guillard.

Frank is also an avid supporter of the Second Amendment. He has taken to Instagram to promote gun-rights and show off his array of firearms. Frank has reached out to millions through social media and conventions. He will be appearing at the Gun Owners of America Gun-A-Thon in April to throw his support behind gun rights.

A few years ago, Frank was a target of a crazed fan. The fan thought he had stabbed Frank years before and was going to a convention to finish the job. The police were able to prevent the attack, but it showed Frank why people need guns for self-defense. Frank had never met the fan before.

I have gotten to know Jason David Frank over the last couple of months. He agreed to sit down and speak with me about being a Power Ranger and his love of firearms.

John: How did you get introduced to guns?

Jason: I’ve always been into guns. I used to go shooting with my karate instructors at Red Dragon Karate. I also lived on five acres in Fontana, CA, so my dad would take my brother and me to go shoot.

John: Have you got any backlash for being pro-gun?

Jason: No, I haven’t. My fans are pretty good about it. I post about guns all of the time. Plus, I live in Texas.

John: What is your favorite firearm?

Jason: My favorite firearm is the Rev Glock 17 and STI 2011

John: You will be at the Gun Owners of America’s Gun-A-Thon in April. You are even paying your own way. Why is it vital for you to help raise money for GOA?

Jason: Yes, I will be attending the Gun Owners of America’s Gun-A-Thon in April. Yes, I’m paying my own way to get there with flights and hotel. GOA’s purpose is to protect and defend the second amendment rights of gun owners. This includes promoting a greater understanding and awareness of the importance and benefits of owning firearms.

I believe in the second amendment and think everyone should learn how to work firearms properly. People used to say Power Rangers was violent back in the day, but the show taught good lessons and morals.

I’m a martial arts instructor and hear people say that karate is violent, but it’s not. It teaches discipline and life-saving skills. It’s important to be educated. The money raised at the Gun-A-Thon will help the GOA to keep fulfilling their purpose.

Gun Owners of America Gun-A-Thon

John: You were the target of a crazed fan that planned on killing you. You told me that is the reason why people need to have guns. Do you feel safer with a firearm?

Jason: I’m a gun owner that knows how to properly use a gun. I train with all sorts of weapons, including gun training. I would feel much safer being able to carry a gun to defend myself or others if needed.

John: Do you ever worry about other crazed fans?

Jason: Not really.

John: How did you get the role of the Green Ranger?

Jason: I went to an agency, they told me I needed to cut my hair before I could audition for anything. I did and came back. They said they didn’t have any roles. I cut my hair for them, so I wasn’t leaving empty-handed. They handed me a script for Power Rangers, and the rest is history.

John: You do a lot of appearances at conventions. Do you like meeting with fans?

Jason: Of course. I have the best fans that show so much love everywhere I go. Comic cons are a hobby of mine. I go because I enjoy it.

John: How did you get into MMA?

Jason: I’ve trained my entire life. I started karate when I was four years old. I’m currently an 8th-degree black belt. I have a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Ajarn under the Muay Thai International Association. It was kind of a natural step going into MMA. I still train every day.

John: Anything upcoming that our readers should know?

Jason: I have a short film called “Omni Boat” filmed under the direction of the Meza Brothers that will be submitted to film festivals next year. It’s part of a larger film that’s consisted of several short films within it. There are so many talented directors, and actors involved in this project like Robert Redford, Adam Devine, Finn Wolfhard, Uncle Luke, and the list goes on.

I’ve been releasing poetry in my #jdfspokentruth series on my YouTube channel (JDFFFN). I own and operate karate schools called Rising Sun Karate Academy with two locations in the Houston area, one in California, and an affiliate in New Jersey. If you can’t make it to one of those locations, I also have an online training system at TrainMeJDF.com.

Jason David Frank will appear at GOA’s Gun-A-Thon on April 25th. Fans can follow him on Instagram at @jdfffn.
