Welcome to the FINAL WEEK of our Summer Inventory Challenge. For an overview of the entire challenge you can visit this link.

This week we are focusing on Emergency Preparedness and Powerless Cooking … and doing an inventory of all our supplies. Remember each challenge will walk you through these three questions:

  1. What do you want to have?
  2. What do you already have?
  3. What do you still need to get?

Introduction Video

What Do You Want to Have?

This week we cover A LOT of ground. If you are just getting started on your emergency preparedness journey, your wish list may be completely different from someone who has been prepping for 20 years. In this week’s video I discuss thinking about your preps in three scenarios: walk away, drive away, and shelter-in-place. For this week we will be thinking about what we want to store based on the following categories:

  • Long term water purification
  • Shelter
  • Heating/cooling
  • Light / power
  • First aid
  • Sanitation / hygiene
  • Powerless cooking
  • Communication
  • Protection

A few years back I put together a master checklist full of ideas of things you may want to consider for your preparedness supplies. This could be a good starting point for you as you determine what you WANT to store! Click here to download the EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS MASTER CHECKLIST now.

In the video I showed a lot of my personal products that I have, I’ll try to include links to as many of them as I can in the resources section below.

Helpful Resources:
Powerless Cooking Class
All-American Sun Oven
InstaFire
GoalZero generators and lights
Emergency Bucket Toilet Seat
Solar Shower
Fortress Clothing Video / Details
Butane Stoves
Laundry Plunger
Tackle Box First Aid Kit Tutorial (@A Bowl Full of Lemons)

What Do You Already Have?

Now on to the fun part. This is another category where things tend to be strewn about your house in random storage areas. I would recommend trying to store evacuation items in a garage if possible for a quick access if you need to leave in a hurry. Most of the things you will be storing won’t be negatively affected by extreme temperatures.

I have a pretty good stash of fun toys but I’m definitely going to be looking through the master checklist and adding a few more things that I need to bolster. First aid is high on the list of categories I want to improve on, especially with covid still raging around the world.

Here’s a sneak peek at a little bit of my stash in case you didn’t want to watch the whole intro video:

What Do You Still Need to Get?

Once you have your list of what you HAVE, cross-reference it with what you WANT. The difference is going to become your shopping list for the next few months. Stock up on things when they come on sale, set aside a little bit of money each month to go towards your long term storage purchases, or save up now and wait until the Black Friday or case lot sales can give you more bang for your buck!

I am thinking of turning the master checklist PDF into more of a customizable spreadsheet where you can put in the quantities that you want to store and what you already have. Also I’d love to have feedback if you have anything else you want to add to this list. You can contribute your thoughts on this old facebook post here.
