But what if there isn’t a grand terrible event. What if we are that frog in a pot of water that the heat is slowly being ratcheted higher. I have seen several violent crimes within a hundred feet of me in my life. Three within 25 feet were so violent and so fast that I hadn’t even figured out what was happening other than I should leave before they were over. It is much more surprising and confusing than most people think. I was a infantry soldier for 8 years and have had perhaps 2500 hours of historical armed and modern unarmed fighting training so I am am not among the worst nor the best when it comes to preparation for violence and I have to really force myself to keep a useful situational awareness. It isn’t as easy as just thinking about it a bit. I stopped flipping off or otherwise antagonizing people 30 years ago.
