Welcome to DAY 2 of our 15 Minute Prepping Projects series. Today we are going to grind some wheat!

Every day for the month of September we will celebrate National Preparedness Month by undertaking a small task to help us get more prepared. Do as few or as many days as you want. Jump in at any time. Do them out of order, or more than one in a day. And feel free to share what you are doing!

Wheat is the staple of many people’s basic food storage plans. It lasts a LONG time and can be used as the foundation of cooking so many things. But you would be surprised at how many people don’t actually even know how to USE their wheat! Or have a wheat grinder but have never opened the box.

I remember I had been “doing” food storage for about a year and I was at a friend’s house and she was grinding wheat and after watching her, it finally dawned on me that wheat is just FLOUR. I thought “I know how to cook with flour, I can do this”. And I finally started using the wheat I had stored.

If you have had adjust your food storage due to allergy or health reasons and are no longer storing wheat, you can substitute any other grain for today’s project.

Options to Grind Some Wheat

Blend It: If you haven’t invested in a wheat grinder yet, you can still use your wheat! A high powered blender like Blendtech or VitaMix can actually grind wheat into a flour. But ANY blender can be used to make blend wheat pancakes or waffles. Check out this recipe to see how to do it! I’m going to demonstrate this on a Facebook Live today so make sure you are in my group.

Hand Grind It: If you have a manual wheat grinder pull it out and start grinding! I have used an inexpensive grinder to do a full bread recipe and it was pretty tedious. (Watch video here). If you are not going to also have an electric grinder I would definitely recommend looking into the Wonder Junior Deluxe. These mills are workhorses and can do so much!

Electric Grind It: If you want to practice cooking with your grains it is so much easier to do if you have an electric grinder. It can also be used during non-powerless emergencies such as job loss and supply chain interruptions. If you have an electric wheat grinder pull it out and grind some wheat today! Sometimes it can feel like an order to pull it out, but we can do anything for 15 minutes! I use WonderMill but NutriMill is also a good option!

Other Options: I have heard that you can grind wheat in a coffee grinder, but you have to strain it and run the coarser chunks through it multiple times. You can also get a wheat grinder attachment for a kitchenaid stand mixer, however I have heard form multiple people that this can burn out your motor so I wouldn’t recommend it.

Have grinding some wheat today and come on over and share what you are cooking with the flour!
