Day 22: Create a Phone Number List (15 Minute Prepping Projects)

Welcome to DAY 22 of our 15 Minute Prepping Projects series. Today we are going to take a few minutes and make a WRITTEN list of all of our important phone numbers.

Every day for the month of September we will celebrate National Preparedness Month by undertaking a small task to help us get more prepared. Do as few or as many days as you want. Jump in at any time. Do them out of order, or more than one in a day. And feel free to share what you are doing!

A phone number list was a fun idea suggested by one of our Facebook community members when I asked for ideas on mini prepping projects. When I thought about it I realized several situations in which I REALLY could have used something like this! When I was a kid / teenager I had all of my family and friends’ phone numbers memorized. But thanks to our smart phones these days and lack of a house phone for many years … I’m embarrassed to say I probably only have 3-4 memorized and NONE of them are my kids’ numbers!

So what do you do in an emergency situation when your phone is dead and that is the ONLY place that you have numbers saved? What do you do if you LOSE your phone and can’t get a hold of anyone to help you out because you don’t know any numbers? What do your kids do if they get lost and don’t have a phone with them and don’t know your phone numbers? It really is a crazy thing! My 10 year old daughter got separated from us at DisneyWorld just this past summer and was able to ask a nice lady to borrow her phone and call me. It was such a relief that she was smart, remained calm, and was prepared with the knowledge needed to be able to “rescue” herself from a scary situation.

I’m not saying to go memorize all your phone numbers (although it’s not a bad idea to try to do that over time). But for today we are going to make a list of all the important numbers we need and print multiple copies of it to stash around. Keep one in your car, one in your wallet, one in your phone case, give one to each kid to keep in their phone case, backpack, etc. You can print it in super tiny font (stash it with a magnifying glass if you have old eyes like me) and laminate it to protect it. If you don’t want to bother laminating you can simply cover the paper with packing tape (that’s my go-to homemade laminating method).
