Welcome to DAY 27 of our 15 Minute Prepping Projects series. Today we’re going to practice cooking something using powdered milk, oh boy!

Every day for the month of September we will celebrate National Preparedness Month by undertaking a small task to help us get more prepared. Do as few or as many days as you want. Jump in at any time. Do them out of order, or more than one in a day. And feel free to share what you are doing!

Click here and scroll to the bottom of the post to view all the past days’ projects.

Powdered milk or dry milk is a common staple in most people’s food storage. It is recommended in most food storage calculators, and is really important if you have young children or pregnant/nursing mothers for them to get those nutrients. But most people have bad memories of nasty powdered milk or are a little intimidated on how to use it.

Powdered milk has come a long way and I actually found a brand that tastes PRETTY dang good if you have to drink it plain. If you haven’t tried Thrive’s Instant Milk yet you might want to give it a whirl (and it’s actually on sale this month too!) Instant Milk is better for drinking but usually costs a little more than regular non-fat powdered milk. If you just want to use it for baking, you don’t need to bother with Instant Milk. I don’t really like to have to store two different kinds so I just store all Instant Milk.

To learn more about powdered milk you can check out this page on my blog. However, I’m going to go over ALL of this info AND MORE including some fun cooking demos tonight in a Cooking with Powdered Milk class. Here are the details on the class!

When: Sep 27, 2022 08:30 PM Eastern Time

Register in advance for this meeting:

Hope to catch you on live, but I will also try to send a replay link to everyone who registers!

If you just want to open a can of milk and try drinking it, I recommend adding a teaspoon of vanilla and sugar per gallon and letting it get very cold in the fridge. If you want to use powdered milk in recipes, add the powder with the dry ingredients and then the necessary water with the wet ingredients. This saves you a step in not needing to make milk first.

There are many other things you can make with powdered milk including evaporated, milk, sweetened condensed milk, buttermilk, yogurt, and even ricotta cheese. Browse through the recipe page on my site for some ideas! And I’d love for you to share your own as well.

Share Your Results

Take a picture of whatever you are cooking with powdered milk today. I’d love to see what you are up to in your kitchens! Here are some ways you can share:
