Welcome to DAY 6 of our 15 Minute Prepping Projects series. Today we are going to practice our sewing skills and picking up any sewing supplies needed for emergencies.

Every day for the month of September we will celebrate National Preparedness Month by undertaking a small task to help us get more prepared. Do as few or as many days as you want. Jump in at any time. Do them out of order, or more than one in a day. And feel free to share what you are doing!

Click here and scroll to the bottom of the post to view all the past days’ projects.

Sewing seems to be one of those lost arts of self reliance for many reasons. It is easy to buy fairly cheap mass-produced clothing now so it doesn’t make as much sense to make or repair your own to “save money”. However, what if supply chains are shut down and you don’t have access to new clothes? What if you lose your job and can’t afford to buy new clothes for your growing children? What if you are in the middle of a pandemic and all service businesses are closed so you can’t send clothes off to the tailor for minor repairs?

Learning some basic sewing skills can be handy for day-to-day needs as well as for more severe emergencies. I used to have a sewing machine that NEVER got used so I finally got rid of it. In doing so, I also got rid of most of my sewing needles and thread so I rarely ever do stitching repairs.

For today’s fifteen minute project, locate a needle and thread, pull out a stitching project that you’ve been “waiting” to complete, and practice those sewing skills!

Sewing Kit Ideas:

  • Click here to see a cute little sewing kit that you may want to purchase if you have ZERO sewing supplies at home. It will help you with some basic mending if that’s all you are comfortable with. This size is also perfect to keep in 72 hour kits.
  • Click here to see a larger kit with more colors and supplies that will help you with some more robust sewing projects. This one would be better to keep with your emergency supplies in the house.

Hope you have fun sewing up a storm today and remember you can do anything for fifteen minutes!

Share Your Results

Did you complete your project today? Did you have to buy any extra gas cans? I want to see pictures of your gas prices and hear all about your experiences! Here are some ways you can share:

Instagram: Use #15minuteprep and tag @jodi_foodstoragemadeeasy on any post or story you do featuring your project. You can follow the hashtag to see everyone’s projects and if you tag me I will repost in my stories throughout the day (if your account is public).

Facebook: Comment on the PINNED posts in my Facebook Group (If you are not a member yet I will try to get you added within 24 hours so you can play along). The most recent day should show up at the top and you can scroll to the right to see past days. I will try to share some of these to Facebook stories as well (no names will be used, don’t worry!)
