“Father Of Modern AI” Says His Life’s Work Won’t Lead To Dystopia

Juergen Schmidhuber, known as the renowned “father of modern AI,” claims that his life’s work won’t lead to a dystopian society. More advanced artificial intelligence has spurred fears that AI will take over what humans used to do making mankind “obsolete.”

The fears are not unfounded.  Many in the technology community have warned that there are implications for the advancements in Generative AI if they go unchecked. Dr. Juergen Schmidhuber, a renowned scientist, artificial intelligence researcher, and widely regarded as one of the pioneers in the field of AI, is more optimistic. According to a report by Forbes, he claims that many of those who suddenly warn against the dangers of AI are just seeking publicity, exploiting the media’s obsession with killer robots which has attracted more attention than “good AI.”

However, we’ve already seen evidence to the contrary. The dystopia we are currently under only stands to get worse as AI advances.

The potential to revolutionize various industries and improve our lives is clear, as are the equal dangers if bad actors leverage technology for personal gain. While Schmidhuber does admit that AI can be used to control and destroy humanity, he also says it can be used for good while claiming we should be more concerned with nuclear weapons.

It is true that AI can be weaponized, and I have no doubt that there will be all kinds of AI arms races, but AI does not introduce a new quality of existential threat. The threat coming from AI weapons seems to pale in comparison to the much older threat from nuclear hydrogen bombs that don’t need AI at all. We should be much more afraid of half-century-old tech in the form of H-bomb rockets.  -Juergen Schmidhuber, Forbes

He also claims that the tyrannical overbearing slave system we already live under is “enough” to control AI.

Some people prefer to talk about the downsides rather than the benefits of this technology, but that’s misleading because 95% of all AI research and AI development is about making people happier and advancing human life and health. -Juergen Schmidhuber, Forbes
