Top ten reasons we gave up cable television

A little over a year ago, we began an experiment with ending our cable television. This was initially hard with me because I was really addicted to 24/7 television. We had grown frustrated with the declining content produced by Hollywood. My continued employment had started looking precarious and we were looking for ways to save money.  The Obama/Pelosi recession was in full swing. I started examining areas of our budget for monthly bills which might be eliminated. Here are the top ten reasons why we decided to cut cable.

1. The hundred dollar cable bill was eating away at our budget
2. Cable television provides hours of mindless viewing even when we found fewer television programs worth watching
3. Few television programs reflected our Christian traditional values.
4. We no longer trust propaganda macerating as news on ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, MSNBS and CNN.
5. More and more broadcast time was taken up with infomercials.  We were tired of paying money for advertising.
6. New technology has made it much easier to choose alternative media.
   Netflix video streaming, Fancast video streaming, Hulu video streaming, and many of the links you find under Internet TV on this site.
7. Wonderful old series television from the 60s, 70s, 80s are available online.
8. Cable remotes make switching channels too easy while choosing a program from the Internet sources takes more deliberate thought.
9. When satellite TV salesmen who stop us in the mall ask us if we would consider switching to their product, we tell them we do not have cable TV, the look of pure shock is hilarious.
10. After a year of our experiment of slowly weaning our selves off of cable TV, here’s what we found: we spent more time doing other activities, we read more books, we talk together more often.  Only now have we discovered how much we were addicted to the noise rather than good content.
