People know about income tax and sales tax, but their total tax burden is substantially higher due to a wide range of more subtle taxes. One that hits nearly every Californian is the cell phone tax. A 5.05% federal tax is levied and then CA adds an additional 10.52% for a total of 15.72%.

A $100 cell phone bill is not uncommon today since many sign up for voice calls, text and data. This means about $16/month to the government. It also is stealth internet tax.
