Taxation Without Representation: Hotel Taxes

The San Diego city council just extended the most insidious of taxes – the hotel tax for 39.5 years. The 2% charge will cost hotel guest more than $1 BILLION over this time period. I find this tax most reprehensible because it affects primarily vistors who are not able to vote against it and get no representation. It’s an easy vote to pass because it is essentially “all in favor of taxing those not here right now to say NO raise your hand”. Taxation without representation.

It also puts the government into the hotel business. Since the city now makes a percentage of every hotel charge they are partial to that industry over others. When innovative new services come along such as AirBNBch and Homeaway (which rents rooms in houses or apartments) the government is easily compelled to impede these businesses since it could cost them tax revenue from their partners hoteliers.
