Molon Labe

I have often discussed the importance
of remembering the full meaning of the second amendment,

Amendment II

A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of
a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be
infringed.

       Many have
argued with me that a militia is not a necessary part of the amendment and it
boils down to just a right for each individual to bear arms. This is
categorically and definitively untrue. The amendment reads very clearly that
Militia is necessary to the freedom of the State/people. Nowhere does it say a
military ran by the federal government. In fact, when laid in line with all the
other checks and balances James Madison intentionally put in place to balance
the power of the people and the states in regards to the power of the federal
government, it is quite obvious that Madison meant a Militia made up of the
free people. Many times, I have been told that a small Militia formed of the
people and well regulated could not stand against our US armed forces; I pray
they never have to. When they say this, I remember King Leonidas of Sparta.

      The Spartans
were a free and brave people. In 480 B.C. as King Leonidas the brave was faced
with one of the greatest armies in the history of civilization; he outright
defied them. The massive Persian army and Xerxes the great had commanded the
Spartans to lay down their weapons and submit to him. Knowing he had only 300
of his best soldiers and that he was outnumbered by thousands, King Leonidas
replied with only two words, “Molon Labe.”

       Molon Labe
means simply “Come and get them.”  King
Leonidas and his men of just over 300 soldiers stood against an army of some
600,000. They fought and fought in a way that is still memorialized almost
2,500 years later. King Leonidas did not win, but he showed that Xerxes and the
Persians could be harmed. They were eventually defeated by a traitor in their
mist and a lack of reinforcements, but they still stood. By standing for what
they knew to be right and true, these brave Spartans and their king proved that
anyone can, and perhaps should, stand up to the bullies of this world.

       There are two
markings on the location of this great battle, one is a stone that has only two
words, yes you got it, “Molon Labe.” 
There is also a plaque that reads the following, “Go tell the Spartans,
travelers passing by, that here, obedient to their laws we lie.” They lie
resting and obedient to Spartan law not Persian law. This is a testament to the
dedication of a people to remain free. A people who refused to bow to a tyrant
and stood up as a true Militia should.

       So, the next
time someone tells you that the government may come and take your weapons, the
next time they state, as fact, that no small army can harm a big army, reply
with two words short, sweet, and eternal. “MOLON LABE!” For in the
end, shall we lie dead under the law of tyrants or shall we lie resting under
the law of the US Constitution that protects our sovereign, God given rights?
