Roanoke Tea Party Picks Up the Gauntlet Thrown Down by Bob Goodlatte and the Republican Establishment

Roanoke, VA – The Roanoke Tea Party has released the following statement regarding the budget compromise that passed the House of Representatives yesterday. 

“Republican Congressional members, including Bob Goodlatte, have shown that their verbal commitments to fiscal responsibility are a farce. Goodlatte and other Republican politicians say this latest budget compromise is a step in the right direction, but it is just a continued step in the wrong direction for our country.  We understand that politicians in Washington feel they have to ‘do something’ about the budget situation, but this ‘something’ is literally worse than doing nothing, at this point. 

Voting to remove spending caps now in exchange for promises of future cuts shows our representatives playing us for fools. It helps them in their reelection bids for 2014, but is certain to end in nothing but increased spending across the board going forward. American citizens know that spending restraint is what is needed in Washington.  

The Roanoke Tea Party has been a long-time proponent of fiscal responsibility. Goodlatte’s public pronouncements of support for fiscal discipline are not supported by his voting record, and the Roanoke Tea Party has made that case repeatedly.

The board of the Roanoke Tea Party has made a decision to do whatever it takes to expose the failures of Congressman Goodlatte. We will work with any political group, in any legal way, to ensure that Goodlatte loses his seat in Congress for his failures. 

Bob Goodlatte and the Republican Party establishment have effectively declared war on the tea party movement. Well, if it’s a political war they want, they now have it.”
