In this sad economy, it is getting increasingly difficult for people to find jobs. It seems that every day more testimonies of people going from one interview to another are hitting the news. But, there is one group of people whose economic woes are not hitting the news nearly enough – war veterans who have served or are serving this country overseas. According to The Washington Post, the jobless rate among veterans has remained frighteningly high. In fact, they published this graph to demonstrate just how bad it really is.

The fact that so many veterans are out of work cannot be blamed entirely on the economy, however. It has come to light that many employers across the nation are actively discriminating against former and active-duty soldiers when considering applicants for various jobs. Two major factors have been found to contribute to the wave of discrimination: one is an active disdain for soldiers, and another is a fear of them.

Military.com has reported that many companies in the United States are afraid to hire soldiers because of mental health risks. Returning veterans are thought to widely suffer from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, and employers fear that because of this, most veterans cannot assimilate to the workplace. However, it was reported recently that only about 20% of veterans actually suffer from PTSD, but the assumption that the number is higher remains rampant.
