Chris Matthews Says Tea Party "Not Far" From Being White Supremacist Party

In the ongoing shitstorm that’s hit House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) over a speech to the European-American Unity and Rights Organization (EURO) in 2002, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews took the opportunity on Tuesday’s Hardball to liken Tea Party Republican’s as a whole to racist hate groups stating,

“These guys believe [President Barack Obama] was somehow an illegal immigrant from Africa because they can’t stand the fact that he’s an African-American president. Let’s be honest about it — they’re not that far from the crowd they refuse to associate with.”

Is there truth in that statement?

Last April, the City of Madison, Wisconsin hosted the 15th annual national White Privilege Conference at the Monona Terrace and discussed issues of white supremacy, social justice, education and the Tea Party. Leonard Zeskind, a human rights activist, president of the Institute for Research & Education on Human Rights and an expert on the Tea Party was one of the break-out group facilitators at this event. . During his session he told his group,

“There’s been a recent academic study, and I say academic because people here are, most of you are academic something-or-the-others, and there has been a longitudinal study that finds the longer you are in the Tea Party, the more racist you become,” 

Matthews is not the first to make the comparison. As reported by the Huffington Post, two years ago, Rep. Alan Grayson did the same saying,

“If the hood fits, wear it. The Tea Party has engaged in relentless racist attacks against our African-American President. For example, when the President visited my home of Orlando, Tea Party protesters shouted ‘Kenyan Go Home.’ Other examples include Tea Party chants of ‘Bye Bye, Blackbird,’ and Tea Party posters saying ‘Obama’s Plan: White Slavery,’ ‘Imam Obama Wants to Ban Pork’ and ‘The Zoo Has An African Lion, and the White House Has a Lyin’ African.’”

On White Nationalist website, StormFront, there is a thread that has been actively debating debating whether or not the Tea party is a racist group several years. Is the Tea Party a racist group? What do you think?
