The Revolution Has Begun

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when it started, but with Speaker John Boehner’s resignation announcement, there’s no doubt the revolution has begun. Perhaps it was the first time you bookmarked the Drudge Report. Or maybe, when at the Drudge Report, you said: “Who is this Breitbart?” Eric Cantor’s primary loss to Dave Brat was certainly a moment when the revolution was stirring and produced tangible results rather than just internet narrative.

Regardless of when the revolution started, it’s clearly underway.

First, what do I mean by revolution? Like with all revolutions, the old ways are being replaced. But this revolution has a twist: the revolution is trying to replace the old ways of doing business with even older, and more timeless ways. Namely, this revolution is a revolution against centralized power.

It could be that this revolution really started two centuries ago. Perhaps it never stopped. We were warned about the price of eternal vigilance, weren’t we?

Okay then.

It’s been a tremendously long and difficult 6 and a half years. I could talk for hours and hours about Spartanburg County and Columbia and all the stops and starts and victories … and far more defeats and setbacks. Not to mention Washington. The saga of Obamacare, Pelosi needing the votes, does she or does she not have them. The midnight votes. The changes to the filibuster. Bart Stupak, The Louisiana Purchase.

John Roberts’ traitorous act. The bridges to nowhere and studying shrimp on treadmills. Shutting down Veterans memorials. Bowing to Arabs. The ACORN videos. The Benghazi lies. Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy.

And here in South Carolina. The Spartanburg Six who betrayed the Republican party platform and worked with Democrats to deny SC families true school choice. The months of Bobby Harrell’s corruption saga (along with a few good reporters who were shipped elsewhere for reporting on it). Operation Lost Vote and the challengers who were kicked off the ballot. Nikki Haley’s $120 million loan to Boeing and the $500 million debt she assigned to SC children. The refusal of the General Assembly to acknowledge nullification as a remedy to stop Obamacare in SC. The abysmal record of DSS when it comes to protecting the most vulnerable. The push for a gas tax, the writing of proviso to negate the law of the Local Govt Fund, the ignoring of the law that requires joint budget hearings.

The list is long and endless. And along the way, over the years, many who joined the revolution back in the day are absent. Or have taken on the quest for personal relevancy that exceeds what they set out to do years ago, that now renders them ineffective, even damaging. Many left out of discouragement, fatigue, anger. Some were driven out by misguided kooks, others found it easier to ignore what they’d learned because it’s hard to sustain a revolution for all these years.

So last week, when news of Boehner’s resignation broke, one of the first things I thought was … is this enough to bring on a second wave of revolution or … enough to bring some folks back who had fallen by the wayside? Will a few years away have re-instilled a sense of responsibility to state and country … and children and grandchildren … and will Boehner’s resignation get them to thinking that perhaps it’s time to step back up?

’cause I admit the victories are few. But … the other side never, ever, ever, ever quits. And so they’ve won. and won. So I’m hoping for the return to the arena of some folks who have walked away. And the joining in of folks who somehow have not been paying attention or thinking it’s not up to them at all, but between the Planned Parenthood videos, the Boehner resignation, the focus on Presidential politics … really I’ll take any reason! They decide now’s the time and they show up and ask “What can I do?”

Primary season begins soon, and there is will be plenty of candidates who need help.

The legislative session begins soon, and many voices of encouragement or dissent are going to be needed.

And final thought. if at anytime along the way, you called, or wrote, or faxed, or held a discussion with a legislator, or wrote a letter to the editor, or spoke with co-workers, or did ANYTHING AT ALL to help bring about the resignation of Boehner … thank you very much.
