Jeff Duncan on Paul Ryan

From Jeff Duncan FB page (where he responded to some comments denigrating Paul Ryan / Freedom Caucus):

Paul Ryan was instrumental in writing the Pledge to America and creating the Young Guns movement which helped the Republicans take the gavel from Nancy Pelosi.

All he has asked for isnt unwavering allegiance- but that the Conference come together, have a majority support for the new Speaker, because if we don’t the media, Obama and the Dems will use the MSM to continue the narrative of dysfunction. That hurts the Presidential election as well.

Paul Ryan is for a secure border first. He is for interior enforcement. Has pledged that he will personally keep an immigration reform bill from coming to the floor. He will abide by the Hastert rule.

If he fooled me, he fooled a whole lot of conservative leaders in the fight in the House too, people you respect.

I didn’t hear Paul say he would only work four days a week. What he said is that it is time to change the modern era role which the Speaker has evolved into. That is one of speding every hour not spent in Washington spent fundraising – for the party, for the NRCC and for other Members – ie. Smoozing with lobbyists and big corporate donors who would have his ear.

We should like the fact that he wants to be a father, a husband, a church attender.

We should like the fact that he wants to set a vision and biz plan for the House. That he has committed to being the communicator of that vision and of the work we are doing in Congress – taking it to the American people – because Lord knows we have been POOR communicators for almost five years.

The very values we espouse and stand for as Christians are being touted by Ryan but now we are beating him up for it? Father and husband first – Congressman and Speaker second. Well, he is a man of deep faith, so Christian first…..then the others.

I don’t want the modern role of a Speaker. I want someone who can create a plan, implement that plan and communicate that (duh – we call the position “Speaker”) to the American people. That is how we change the activities or lack thereof in the Senate. That is how we change the White House.

Paul Ryan, for all of his faults (and he has some, I agree) wrote the Pledge to America, created the Young Guns program and was instrumental in helping craft the message that helped Republicans take the gavel from Nancy Pelosi.

He is a guy who, after in depth discussions with the conservatives who are in the trenches here in Congress fighting and who are responsible for the change we have seen with Boehner and McCarthy just since January, they felt confident enough in their ability to work with him, should he become Speaker, to keep moving the Congress in the right direction.
