Replacing Your Vote for President

If you voted for Barack Obama during the last two presidential elections, you wouldn’t mind the legislation some high dollar lobbyists are pushing, and several legislators are supporting.

If, however, you did not, and most Missourians didn’t, you may want to pay attention.

There is a quiet but growing movement for Missouri to join the National Popular Vote (NPV). NPV is an interstate compact states like New York and California have joined, allocating their presidential electors to the presidential candidate who wins the national popular vote. Among other celebrities former Vice-President Al Gore supports the National Popular Vote.

Electors, chosen in each state, select the president. The number of electors in each state is equal to the number of U.S. Representatives and Senators in each state.

Missouri has ten electoral votes – eight for our house seats and two for our senators.

I first cast a vote for president in the 2000 election. I, like the majority of Missouri, voted for George W. Bush. Our electors, because of our vote, also voted for George Bush. If our some lobbyists and legislators had their way, Missouri would have voted for Al Gore instead.

In fact, in the past two elections, Missouri voted for John McCain and Mitt Romney. However, if Missouri were an NPV state, we would have been forced to vote for Barack Obama instead. Do you want New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco deciding to whom Missouri’s votes for president go?

The case made to conservatives for change is Republicans cannot win the White House without National Popular Vote. This is simply not true. I cringe to think legislation of this magnitude is being supported based on hyperbole.

It’s unfortunate some legislators have been deceived into believing this plan will do anything other than inflicting further damage to the Constitutional Republic our Founders established.

If you want Missourians deciding to whom our Electors are awarded and protect the balance created by the Electoral College, you need to contact your legislator and ask they oppose the National Popular Vote!
