GOP Agrees to Two Immigration Votes

Rep. Jeff Denham’s (R-CA) discharge petition (H.Res. 774) failed to get the last two signatures needed to move toward a vote in June.  Immigration is not completely off the table though.  Next week, the House plans to vote on two immigration bills: Rep. Bob Goodlatte’s (R-VA) Securing America’s Future Act (H.R. 4760) and a compromise bill that is still being written.  There are problems with both bills, but this stops the discharge petition in its tracks, keeping Americans from dealing with mass amnesty with no border security.

President Trump is supportive of placing the two bills on the floor, but has not given his specific thoughts on either bill.  Even though we have not seen the second bill in written form yet, we have heard the rumors about what will be included.  There are plans to add border wall funding, but only if there is a trade-off with a pathway to citizenship which will grant amnesty to 1.8 million illegal immigrants.  Rep. Goodlatte’s bill will grant over 600,000 DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients amnesty, however, it includes an end to chain migration, elimination of the Diversity Visa Lottery, mandate E-Verify, and border wall funding authorization.  The votes simply are not there for a more conservative bill, which has put Republicans in a difficult situation.

Both bills will unfortunately provide a measure of amnesty which will not fare well for Republicans in the November elections.  A recent CBS News poll showed that immigration has changed in 48% of areas where respondents lived and 56% of those responded that the areas have changed for the worse.  As more Americans are seeing the degradation of their communities because of illegal immigrants, they are making it a priority to vote for those who will protect their freedoms.  If Republicans do not hold true to the promises they ran on, we may see an overwhelming number of Democrats elected to Congress.  As a result, more extreme legislation on immigration will surely pass in the future.

Even if either bill passes, there is no indication yet that the Senate will take it up.  Eagle Forum will watch closely as these two votes take place and keep you informed of the results.
