The First Regular Session of the Ninety-Ninth General Assembly convenes at noon, Wednesday, January 4, 2017.  It will begin a year of much anticipated changes and one that will see not only super majority control in the Missouri House and Senate but one with a Republican Governor as well.

All of us are looking forward to seeing what this new “team” will accomplish for Missourians. We should expect them to limit government’s impact on our lives through the elimination or remodeling of existing laws, rules and regulations not by adding more to make Missouri stronger economically. Stay with us to keep up to date on what is happening during the session.

On that day, twenty-two (22) Representatives and four (4) Senators will be taking their seats because their predecessors were term limited. It’s quite a different story when we look at those who will be sworn into the new Congress in Washington!

The One-Hundred Fifteenth United States Congress has been sworn in and convened at the nation’s Capital as of noon Eastern time today. Unlike the Missouri General Assembly, the few new members of the Congress will be the result of former members having retired, been defeated in an election or died. Unlike Missouri and fourteen other states, the US Congress has NO term limits. We’ve been practicing the Einstein definition of insanity now for quite some time!

Congress was meant to be a citizen legislature. Our representatives were supposed to go to Washington, serve for a short time, then return to live under the laws they made.

This vision has been lost. Congress is now a haven for career politicians who put their own power, perks and privileges ahead of public service. Even worse, they are nearly impossible to unseat thanks to cozy connections with lobbyists and special interests.

That’s why we have so many who have been around for so long. Here’s just a sampling:

In 2004, the total wealth of all U.S. Senators and Representatives was $3.5 billion. That number grew to an estimated $7 billion in 2015 (including the impact of the crash of 2008)!

Some of you may be saying, “we already have term limits! It’s called the ballot box!”

As we saw in last November’s election, Congress has a 13 percent approval rating, but a 95% re-election rate! That’s because our elected leaders can abuse their power to keep away electoral challenges, which transfers power away from citizens and into the hands of unaccountable career politicians. Won’t you help us break this cycle, by signing the online petition?

President-Elect Donald Trump and Speaker Paul Ryan agree Congressional term limits are needed. Senator Ted Cruz and Representative DeSantis have pledged they will introduce a Congressional Term Limits bill containing limits of three (3) terms/six (6) years for the House and two (2) terms/twelve (12) years for the Senate.  It probably won’t surprise you that entrenched Senator Mitch McConnell has already said it won’t be on the Senate’s agenda! So let’s do everything we can to let our voices be heard in support of it!

Congressional Term Limits isn’t a partisan issue.  Republicans and Democrats alike support the issue.  It may be the only thing they agree on, but even President Obama agrees with President-elect Trump and supports Congressional Term Limits! You know there must be something to it!

We can’t wait for Congress to act. Our broken system needs repair. United for Missouri and U.S. Term Limits are working to call an amendment convention under Article V of the Constitution to propose an amendment for Term Limits on the U.S. House and Senate. If we do not act now, we may never be able to bring back government of, by and for the people.

Even if you have signed other term limit petitions it’s important that you sign this one too. We need to be able to show every Missouri legislator why it’s important to pass this resolution and that people in their district support it!

Seventy-four percent (74%) of Missouri voters said they wanted Congressional Term Limits in 1992.  Unfortunately, states like Missouri whose voters approved Congressional Term Limits watched the courts find them to be unconstitutional. Why? Because the federal offices to which they apply are in the US Constitution and not the Missouri (or other state’s) Constitution.

Some might say, “well, that was in 1992. Things have changed and people may no longer agree with Congressional Term Limits.”  It’s a reasonable thought. What do Missourians think about Congressional Term Limits today?

I must report to you that today, seventy-four percent (74%) of Missourians no longer support Congressional Term Limits…it’s grown to EIGHTY-SIX percent (86%) support!

Let me re-emphasize that even if you have signed other term limit petitions it’s important that you sign this one too. We need to be able to show every Missouri legislator why it’s important to pass this resolution and that people in their district support it!
