Ain’t democracy wunnerful?
A correspondent shared this graphic with us.
We are constantly told that democracy is the worst form of government… except for all the rest.
We are constantly told that in a true democratic scheme of government, minority rights are protected against the tyranny of the majority.
We are also told that representative democracy is one of the best forms of democracy because we can elect and empower men and women who can concentrate on the matters and decisions facing our polity – town, county, tribe, State, etc. – and make wise decisions.
We are told that fears of corrupt elections, vote-buying, fake voters, fraud, and all the rest of the limpets on the hull of democracy can be and are controlled. Especially now that we have electronic voting and counting systems and because we have a watchful, vigilant press and courts and all the trappings that are wrapped around modern democracy.
But what have we seen?
National socialism – the NSDAP and its leader Adolph Hitler – was put into power in Germany in the 1930s through the process of democracy.
Tammany Hall ran New York City for years and years, put into place and buttressed by democratic means.
Mandami of New York, Newsom of California, Walz of Minnesota, and many more were all put into office and power through democratic elections. And what have they done to their States? (Not saying that the GOP kind are much (if any) better.)
The idiots that run the parliamentary governments of the United Kingdom, Scotland, Canada, Ontario, Quebec, were all put into office through democratic elections to “represent the people.”
And as Tom Knapp ably pointed out a few days back, so-called republics are not really any better in the long run. They may survive and be less tyrannical in the short term, but the path downward of decay and corruption has been demonstrated for millennia. Even though republics have important, often enforced, limits on government powers, those go away more quickly than the governments do.
Winston Churchill may have been right about “democracy” but all that history does is demonstrate that it is not the form of government that is bad. Rather, it is the power we give government.
Representative Thomas Massie is condemned by The Donald, MAGA, and both old parties in general. Why? Maybe because he is closer to the truth than they would like anyone to be. And people listen to him. Here is some of what he said:
Of course, Massie is not a true lover of liberty: not a libertarian, not a minarchist, and sure enough, no free-market anarchist. So he doesn’t go far enough.
The only way to control, to curb, the power of government? Strip it, starve it, and silence it. These three “s” apply particularly to the FedGov. We need to strip it down to bare bones, at least for a start: maybe foreign affairs and national defense. (NOT, say again, NOT world domination and a world cop.) Maybe establishing national standards and resolving disputes between States. But we need to starve it: not just drop the Income Tax into a pot of boiling sulfuric acid. Not just forcing a balanced budget every year, war or not. Not just getting rid of waste, fraud, and abuse, but ending welfare programs. For individuals, but especially for corporations and for State and local governments. And we need to repeal – put that “cancelled” stamp – on every statute, every regulation, and 99% of executive orders and memorandums of agreement and understanding. Maybe, for a start, state that the US Code be no longer than say, the New Testament. No, not the entire Bible. Just those 27 books. Some of which are less than half-a-page unless you write really big.
That is a start. Maybe even a good start. But we must be sure to do the same thing, and quickly, to Fifty State governments (and yes, the territories, too). And to ten thousand (plus!) county and city governments (and tribal governments, too).
Every domestic government program, federal or State, can be done by voluntary cooperative efforts by private businesses, whether for profit or non-profit. And in modern, 21st century times, it doesn’t take a government agency or really, much of a court system, to enforce standards. Like how long an inch is, or how many lumens is adequate for lighting. Or how much water you need to use to flush a toilet. And if some of these things need to be decided “democratically” that can be done in a cooperative with no more power than your local electric cooperative or cooperative natural foods grocery or outdoor equipment store has.
So here is a big raspberry for democracy. And for monarchy and oligarchy and polyarchy and republics and any other form of human, mandatory government.
Let us live free. Let us accept responsibility for our own acts. Let us seek our own way to Heaven or to Hell.
