The latest Old World Crisis: the Ceuta invasion

Last week, about 60,000 “migrants” pushed across the undefended, unfortified border between the Kingdoms of Morrocco and Spain. (The numbers cited vary wildly.)

Since the Spanish city of Ceuta has only 83,000 residents and is separated from the rest of Spain by the Strait of Gibralter, this constituted a significant event and is having worldwide reverberations.

It also points out the serious problems that virtually all of the Old World (Eurasia and Africa, and their outlying islands) face in 2026 and beyond. Mass migrations (actually, invasions) are just one: we can add the weasel-minded attitude and actions of their own governments, the economic problems caused by massive government spending (leading to inflation), and of course, all those who want to destroy societies. Poor education (courtesy mostly government schools but also religious institutions) just add to this.

As for the Ceuta crisis: expect more of these sorts of incidents. Across the world. But why? That has to do with many factors, but in particular, who or what has triggered these things. It isn’t necessarily those people and organizations who are being blamed.

But it is interesting to note who is being blamed for what. That is often more revealing then the actual mass of people who overwhelmed a significant city for days. We suspect that many of these are just pawns cozened into playing a part. Others are people, including members of organized groups, who are seeking to move across borders for various (often nefarious) purposes. And no doubt, there are a few really fleeing intolerable conditions, somewhere.

It is reported that most of the migrants have left Ceuta. We do not know if they were ferried over to mainland Spain or returned to Morocco. We know that close to 100 were killed; that number may also be much higher. But now we are told that only 10,000-15,000 are left in the city. As we live just outside Rapid City, South Dakota, a city of similar population but of much greater area, we can understand something of the impact this is making.

Indeed, starting today, the Black Hills will host the 86th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally for a week. During that 10-day event, we expect 400,000 to 500,000 people to show up in the Black Hills with a normal population of around 250,000 plus 40,000 or so “regular” tourists the rest of the season. Rapid City itself will likely have as many as 100,000 bikers and vendors and families descend upon it. The big difference is that these bikers et al. come with lots of money to spend (and do!) and then go home. They also are 99.95% law-abiding, and the area has prepared for years to host them all in hotels, motels, campgrounds, and rentals. We know what to expect.

Those folks in Ceuta did not. And instead of kind, peaceful, and welcome guests, the invaders (apparently overwhelmingly Muslim) were violent and immediately began invading businesses and homes to loot and bully people.

There is a lot to blame, and everyone seems to have a favorite.

The socialist government in Madrid is one to blame: the prime minister got approval for up to 500,000 migrants to come into Spain legally, as the country is desperate for willing labor. Their demographics, like that of all Europe, are abysmal. So he is seen as waving a big “WELCOME” banner.

The royal government of Morocco is also blamed, although the reasons for them doing this vary. Although Morocco did not even exist for centuries after Spain gained Ceuta and other territories on the coast of North Africa, Morocco claims them, calling them a relic of Spanish colonization and imperialism. Morocco is supposed to be a client state of the US FedGov, or Israel, or perhaps Russia. (See next.) As a rather moderate Muslim (not Islamist) state, Morocco has problems similar to Mexico or Canada: migrants seeking escape into Europe get stuck there, and are overwhelming resources.

So what about the FedGov? There are claims that there are idiots in Congress that are trying to force Spain to give up these territories. Rep. Massie pointed this desire out in a committee report, though no bill or law was actually passed. But the FedGov is also upset at Spain for denying use of NATO bases there to support operations against Iran.

Israel? Similar to DC, they are mad at Spain and so, the story goes, they work with DC gangsters to punish Madrid. And divert the attention of Europeans away from them, Gaza, and Lebanon. And also provide an example of what Israel faces with the surrounding (and internal) Islamist Arabs.

And of course, the evil machinations of various Islamist devoted followers of the Prophet can be blamed: they have clearly stated that one of their many efforts at world domination includes regaining al-Andalus, the Muslim name for Iberia (Spain and Portugal) since the armies of Allah conquered it in AD 711. Any territory that has been under Muslim rule rightfully belongs to the Dar al-Salam (House of Peace or House of Submission) forever. And therefore it is morally right – and required – to reconquer it.

(It took what became Spain and Portugal until 1492 (781 years) to regain their freedom and land from the Moors who ruled al-Andalus as part of the Dar al-Salam. They drove the Moors, other Muslims, and Jews out of Iberia, and started to push them back in North Africa. However, they got distracted by Columbus’ “discovery” of the New World and the opportunities there for evangelism and wealth, and did not push the Islamic armies and rulers and populations back to the east. So now they are living with their failure of 500 years past.)

Societies are always at the mercy of the machinations of governments, and this is a new example. But far from the last. When things are not going well, and people are unable to work voluntarily and cooperatively to sort things out, government just makes things worse. As we see in Ceuta! Who is next?
