Deepwater’s Munster: AI Is “Different This Time”
Last night’s ZeroHedge Debate brought together AI bull Gene Munster and veteran investor (and AI bear) George Noble for a clash over whether the AI-driven stock market rally is another speculative bubble or the beginning of a much larger technological revolution.
Munster argued that AI really is “different this time,” with adoption and corporate spending poised to grow far beyond current expectations. Noble pushed back, warning that massive capital expenditures, mounting debt, and questionable returns on investment bear troubling similarities to past bubbles.
We recommend watching the full debate, but here are the highlights for those who missed it:
Munster: AI Is “Different This Time”
A famous Apple-bull in the 2010s (an trade that’s looking pretty good at today’s valuations), Munster dismissed the Dot-Com scare that Noble and others are applying to the AI bull run:
“I’m careful when I say that this is different, but this is different. What’s going on right now in AI, the significance of it is hard, I think, for humans to wrap our minds around.”
The bull thesis rests on AI spending to grow as adoption spreads across industries, particularly those dependent on knowledge work… and the average AI model now has an IQ of 130, compared to the average human with 100.
“There’s $150 billion or $300 billion between OpenAI and Anthropic, $300 billion gonna be spent in the next 12 months from enterprise customers. That’s real spending. But that still doesn’t answer the question: how do you get from $300 billion to trillions of spending?”
Munster compared corporate AI-spending relative to traditional software (SaaS), citing a wide divide that, if closed, could mean a growth of several multiples for the AI sector.
“The average spend on AI per employee is 25 bucks a month right now. The average spend on, if you look at software, is $700. So this has so much room to grow… the next three to five years are going to surprise people, not just surprise, shock people at how resilient the AI trade is.”

George keeping TSLAQ alive
Noble drew on his experience shorting Tesla to challenge Munster’s reliance on long-term growth projections, arguing that optimistic forecasts mean little if the underlying financial performance fails to materialize.
“I will freely admit that I lost money in the past shorting Tesla, but I also happily report that this year has worked out pretty well so far.”
“If you look at not only the Tesla revenues [being] way off, but even worse, the margins associated with those revenues, it’s been a complete and utter disaster.”
The same risk, he argued, applies to AI companies whose valuations depend heavily on earnings projected (emphasis on projected) years into the future.
“I get in a bull market where people are extending time horizons and cost of capital is at a minimum, dreams have more appeal.” But with capital becoming more expensive, Noble suggested that credit markets may be less willing to finance those ambitions.
“They always say the bond guys are smarter than the equity guys. Bond guys are like, ‘You’ve got some explaining to do.’ The equity guys are the dreamers… doesn’t matter what I think, the market is not buying what you’re selling.”
