CDC Wants To Strip Vaccine Compensation From Dead Child’s Family
The CDC has stated that it may appeal a vaccine injury award to a family who lost their child following a flu shot. The CDC stated following the Taipei High Administrative Court ordering of the Ministry of Health and Welfare to pay NT$2.08 million (US$63,599) in compensation to the family of the student, surnamed Chen.
Chen was given the A(H1N1) influenza virus in 2009. What followed was a horrendous couple of years boasting unspeakable side-effects, including swollen eyes, urticaria and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. In 2012, following a two year battle, Chen died of septicemia.
Chen’s family immediately had their vaccine injury claim rejected by the Ministry of Health and Welfare but the Taipei High Administrative Court sided with the family.
However, according to the Taipei Times, the CDC immediately swooped in and announced the claim as potentially inaccurate.
“The ruling will have an effect on the integrity of the vaccine injury compensation deliberation system,” CDC Director-General Steve Kuo (郭旭崧) said yesterday when answering questions from lawmakers.
He said the case had been deliberated by the vaccine injury compensation committee, which is an independent committee consisting of more than a dozen specialists, and it concluded that Chen’s death was not caused by the vaccine, but by genetically inherited abnormalities in his immune system
Losing a child is one of the worst tragedies a family can know, so imagine the disheartened feeling when a group of experts decide that your child died from a vaccine only to have the CDC step in determine the claims to be “mistaken.” This is just another example of the sad state of affairs for many families who must endure a confrontational process after losing a child.
