How to Sign Up for the Do Not Call List in Illinois

You may be thinking about joining the Do Not Call list in Illinois, but are not sure how to do so.

Telemarketing calls are annoying. Unscrupulous telemarketing calls can also lead to potential crimes like identity theft and fraud. The Do Not Call Registry offers you a way to opt out.

Fortunately for you, the State of Illinois makes it relatively easy to put your name on the registry, and there are several ways to do it. Here’s how:

Register Online

1. Go to www.donotcall.gov and follow the instructions.
2. You will be asked to provide the telephone number that you want added to the list and a valid email address that can be used to confirm your request.
3. You will receive an email confirming your request. You then have to reply to the email within 72 hours to place your name on the registry. Failure to respond to the email means that you will not be added to the registry and will continue to receive telemarketing calls.

Register Over the Phone

1. Call (888) 382-1222 and follow the instructions.
2. You must call from the phone number that you want to be placed on the Do No Call Registry. You can only register the number that you are calling from.
3. You will be asked to enter your phone number again, and a computer will confirm that it is the number you are calling from.
4. If the number matches, you will receive an automated confirmation that you are now registered.

After you follow these steps, you may have to wait one to three months before the telemarketing calls completely cease. Businesses are allowed this waiting period to update their lists.

However, if after this period, you continue to receive unwanted calls, you can report it to the Illinois Attorney General’s office at (800) 386-5438.
