Backpacking in Menorca

Of all the Balearic Islands, Menorca is the least developed and the most mysterious. Between its two largest towns, Ciutadella and Mao, the interior is a patchwork of dramatic ravines, rolling hills and green fields, dotted with ancient sites and rural villages. It’s the perfect place to go if you want to sample the culture of the Balearics away from the coastal ribbon developments, and the wealth of hiking and adventure opportunities make it perfect for backpackers.

For those travelling on a shoestring, Menorca is relatively cheap to visit. You can subsist here, and have a good time, for as little as £25 per day. There are also plenty of cheap package deals on Menorca breaks with companies like On the Beach, so if you fancy a breather from hostel dorms then this could be a good option.

While you might usually prefer to rely on public transport, in Menorca it really is worth splashing out on hiring a car. The bus network is limited, and with your own vehicle you’ll have unlimited access to rural lanes, ancient churches and hidden beaches beyond the major tourist destinations. The best place to start your island tour is Ciutadella, one of the oldest and largest towns, which has its fair share of good restaurants and nightclubs as well as good budget accommodation. Mao, the other large town, has a culture that’s focused strongly around its port, and one of the best ways to see the surrounding area is to book a glass bottom boat tour. These last for around an hour, and will take you past attractions like La Mola Fortress, Fort Malborough and the Sant Felip Castle.

If you’re keen to escape Menorca’s urban side then pull on your hiking boots and take a walk to the island’s highest point. Although it’s just 358 metres above sea level, Monte Toro has beautiful panoramic views across the whole island and it’s an attractive ramble to the top from the pretty town of Es Mercadal.

If you’ve got a little more cash to splash then you should consider exploring the countryside by horseback. Horses are highly prized in Menorca, playing a role in everything from working the fields to fiesta performances, and now there are several riding clubs across the island where everybody from novices to experienced riders can enjoy lessons and trekking.

Finally, don’t miss out on the chance to explore the seas around Menorca in a kayak. There are specialist canoeing and kayaking courses available around the island and most of the main resorts offer equipment hire to experts.
