Things to Do Before Going on A Long Vacation

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

A long vacation is always refreshing, fun and memorable. They are even better if nothing is forgotten or nothing is left undone that would ruin it. Below are some of the things you should remember to do before you leave out on a long, relaxing trip.

Notify the Utility Company

Since a long vacation can encompass a few weeks, you should always notify your utility company that won’t be using your home for a while. You may not have to cut the electricity and water off, but notifying the company will give them a heads-up to look out if there is an unusual spike in the usage during the time you are gone. This is an important precaution, since unscrupulous people may find out you are going away on a trip and take advantage of your home while you are gone.

Unplug Electronics

Always unplug the electronic equipment in your home that may have valuable data saved on them as well, as well as items that are expensive. This can be your television set, computers and stereo system. If there is a bad storm while you are away, these items can have electrical damage if plugged into an outlet, and may not be able to be repaired. If you have a modem for computer and phone connection, unplug it until you return.

Water Heater

There is no need in leaving the water heater set on high while you are gone. Turn it down to the lowest setting until you return from vacation. If leaving for an extended period of time, you may also want to consider shutting off the water supply to all toilets.

Cancel Mail

Call the post office and have your mail delivery stopped while you are away. Cancel the paper delivery as well. When newspapers pile up on your driveway, it leaves a sign that you are away, which leaves an easy target for burglars.

Washing Machine

Always unplug the washing machine hose before you go away. The washing machine hose has a tendency to break easily, which can result in a lot of water damage happening to your home should it occur while you are away.

Pets

If you have pets that you are leaving at home while you are away, make sure they have plenty of water and food as well as an automatic feeder. Remember that if you leave your pets at home, you need to keep the heating or air conditioning unit running so the house will be comfortable for them. If you are gone for an extended amount of time, it is a good idea to have a relative or neighbor come in daily to check on your pet and spend a little quality time with them. They can check your pet’s food and water supply before leaving as well.

Paying Your Bills

Do not forget to pay your current and upcoming bills before you leave for vacation. The last thing you need is coming home from an enjoyable vacation only to have some of your utilities cut off, or collection notices at your door. You can also set up automatic payments ahead of time before you go so that you do not have to stop while you are away to make payments online. Always double-check to make sure your mobile bill payment is up to date if you are traveling abroad. You want that service available when you need it.

There are plenty of other reminders that you can add to this list, but this is a good start to help you focus on what needs taking care of before you go away for fun and relaxation.
