36 million passengers pass through the Sydney Airport every year, making it the busiest airport in all of Australia. To help our readers have an easier time flying in and out of Sydney, we put together these tips for Travelers flying via Sydney Airport.

Getting to the Airport

If you’re driving yourself to the airport, there is a page on the Sydney Airport website that will let you enter your location and the terminal number you want to go to, then you can get directions by simply clicking a button. If you’re driving yourself, you can save money on parking by booking ahead of time. You can book up to four days of parking for just $69 at the domestic terminal carpark. At the blue emu carpark, you can book up to 15 days for just $95. You can park for up to a month at the international terminal carpark for just $199.

You can also get to the airport by taxi or shuttle service. It’s even possible to find complimentary pickup and drop-off service being offered. Shuttle bus companies can provide transportation between the airport and most of Sydney’s suburbs and regional areas.

There are also a number of bus services traveling to and from the Sydney Airport. Many of the bus services do require pre-booking. More information about bus schedules can be found at www.sydneybuses.info.

Getting through Security

When packing your carry-on bags, you’ll have to make sure that you do not pack any banned items and there are also limits on the amount of liquids, aerosols and gels you can pack. The limit on liquids applies to international flights to and from Australia, as well as to passengers on the domestic leg of an international flight within Australia. Regulations state that you may not bring aboard any containers carrying more than 100 L of liquids. The containers also must be placed in a transparent, resealable bag.

Dangerous items that are not allowed on flights include weapons and ammunition, and this includes things like pepper spray and stun guns. You’re not allowed to bring poisons or radioactive materials on board. Flammable items like fuel, paints, matches etc. are also banned. Certain machinery and tools are not allowed on board. Your bags will be screened by security and the Sydney Airport also has body scanners. The body scanners used represent the most advanced screening technology available today and they are able to detect a wide range of threats that may be undetectable with other screening techniques.

The Sydney Airport Terminals

The Sydney Airport has three separate terminals. Terminal one is for all international flights. Terminal two is for domestic flights on Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Tiger, REX, Aeropelican, QantasLink. Terminal three is for domestic flights on Qantas.

If you need to do some shopping while you are at the airport, terminal one, the international terminal, has more than 120 retailers. There are 50 retailers in terminal two. You will have a lot of options available to to do some shopping while you’re waiting to board your plane. On the website for the Sydney Airport you can find more information about specific stores.

International travelers will also have the option to do some duty-free shopping. There are some restrictions however and the limits are as follows: for alcoholic beverages, you must be 18 years of age or older to make a purchase, and you are limited to 2.25 L per person. Purchasing tobacco products also requires customers to be 18 or older and you are limited to 50 cigarettes or 50 g of tobacco or cigar products per person. For all other items, there is a limit of AUD$900 per person if you are 18 or older, and a limit of AUD $450 per person for those under 18 years old.

Terminals one and two also have a number of options for hungry travelers. There are grab and go options, bars and cafés, and also casual dining restaurants in both terminals.
